sonalreplacementwiththetitleofaprefectoftheCity(praefectus
urbi).Augustuslefttheprefectwiththeassistanceofsomemilitary
troops,mostprobablyapartofhisguard,whichwascommanded
byaprefectduringhistimeinpower.Tisiswheretheoriginsof
thelaterurbancohorts(cohortesurbanae)canbelookedfor.How-
ever,onceAugustusreturnedtoRome,everythingwouldbeback
tothepreviousstate.90Akindofchangeinthissystemoccurredin
2B.C.,whentheprefectsofthePraetorianGuard(praefectipraeto-
rio)wereappointedforthefirsttime;theoretically,therewasno
longeraneedtoappointaspecialcommanderoftroopswhich
weretobeleftintheCityjthistaskwouldbeentrustedtothe
