stitutesanattempttoreconstructthetrialofApolloniusofTyana
beforethetribunalofDomitian,thedescriptionofwhichcanbe
foundinthepagesofthebiographywrittenbyFlaviusPhilostra-
tus.Toughthisbiographywaswrittennotearlierthanduring
thereignofSeptimiusSeverusandislegendaryinnature,inmy
opinionitcanbeusedasasourceforanalyzingthecourseofcrim-
inalproceedingsbeforetheimperialtribunal.Telastchapterof
theFlaviancycle(chapter14)isacommentaryonapoembyStatius,
inwhichthepoetassignstheprefectsofRomethedutyofguard-
ingthesafetyoftheemperor,whichwasgenerallyoneofthetasks
requiredfromthepraetorianprefects.
Teremainingtenchaptersaretheresultoftheauthor)sother
researchinterests.Chapters1and2coverissuesrelatedtothepro-
tectionofpublicorderinRepublicanRome.Tefirstoneisofa
generalnature,whilethesecondisananalysisofthetopographic
aspectofthemostfamousancientmurder,i.e.theplaceofdeathof
JuliusCaesar.Chapter3bringsanattempttodeterminethepopula-
tionoftheCityofRomeduringtheearlyempireandthemethods
forassessingitssize.Chapters4,5and16constituteasetofstudies
devotedtotheroleofRomancitizens)clothinginthepublicspace,
alsoduringthegames.Chapters6and15areexamplesofanaly-
sisofthehistoryofindividualfiguresorentirefamilies,ofpeople
involvedintheadministrationoftheRomanstate.Chapter7is
