The“ScandinavianinventionofSocialDemocratic
architecture,”shewrote,“withitscleanblendofrational
functionalismandresponsetouse,relatedtoclimate
worthinessthatwasrootedinastillmemorable
vernacular.”29Tothatrepresentationshewouldadd:“to
mygeneration,theflagsofStockholm’sExhibition
of1930signaledajoyfulpromiseofafriendly,trusting
societythatbelievedsocialismmeantatogetherness
ofoneextendedfamily.”30
Thissocialistimagination,itselfheterogeneousand
takingvariousdirections,wastheyardstickforTeam
10projects,anditconstitutedoneofthemainlines
ofcontinuitybetweenmodernarchitecturebeforeand
afterthewar.InthecaseoftheprewarCIAM,itincluded
admirationforarchitectureintheSovietUnion,notonly
duringitsinitialavant-gardephasebutalsoafterthe
introductionofsocialistrealism,whichledHansSchmidt
toargueforamorecarefulrethinkingoftherelationship
betweenmodernarchitectureandthepast.31Particularly
strongwerealliancesbetweenmodernarchitectsand
social-democraticmunicipalitiesorprogressivehousing
cooperativesinAmsterdam,Berlin,Budapest,Frankfurt,
Hamburg,Lyon,Prague,Rotterdam,ViennaandWarsaw,
aswellasthegardencitiesoftheParissuburbs.Many
oftheseexperiencesreverberatedinthewelfare-state
projectaftertheSecondWorldWar,andina1978
interviewPeterSmithsonqualifiedtheimmediatepostwar
periodasfollows:“AtthetimeIwouldhavesaidIwas
asocialistaswell.Itsimplyseemedlikeagoodcause.
Isupposeeveryoneofmygenerationwouldsaythesame
thing.IfyouwouldaskBakemathesamequestionyou
wouldgetasimilaranswer,becauseagenerationfeltthis
