madeofclaymixedwithgravel,withfragmentsof
andironsfoundnexttoit.Thefloorinthewestern
partofroomL12wasmadeofalayerofpalegrey-
ishpackedearth.Inthelaterusagephaseofroom
L12(stratum4b),thefloorwasmadeofalayerof
packed,lightgreyandyellowishearth,withnofea-
turesfoundwithintheroom.
TheearlierusagephaseofroomL12(stratum
4a)maybeassociatedwiththefindslocatedinthe
layerofdebris10-15cmthickabovethefloorof
roomL12,sealedupwiththefloorwhichbelongs
totheroom’slaterusagephase.Theeasternpartof
theroomfeatures2flintsandabowl.Inthewest-
ernpart,inturn,adozenandironfragmentswere
found,alongwith2flintswithbitumentracesand1
grinder.Thefindsassociatedwithalaterfloorlevel
(stratum4b)[Fig.3.25:1]included:2flints,1ob-
sidianfragmentandarrow-fenestratedpotstands,
aswellasapiercedpotterydisc.
RoomL12canbedescribedasthemainroomof
House2andmayhaveservedvariouspurposes.It
wasaspaciousroomwithafloorspaceofca.10m2.
Intheearlierphasetheremayhavebeenaparti-
tionwallbetweenthebuttresseswhichmayhave
dividedtheroomintotwoparts.Theovenandthe
hearthheatedtheroomandmayhavebeenused
topreparemealsorheatthemup.Withinroom
L12,afewfragmentsofcookingpotsandlidswere
found,alongwithsmallquantitiesofleftoveran-
imalbonesandfragmentsofandironswhich
indicatethatmealswerepreparedoreateninthis
room.Thefindsofandirons,knownfromthewest-
ernpartofroomL12,shouldbeassociatedwiththe
presenceofahearth.Theywerenodoubthelpful
insupportinganycookingpotsabovethehearth
slabwheremealswerecookedorkeptwarm.Or-
namentalarrow-fenestratedpotstandsmayhave
beenusedduringcommensaleating.Boththeoven
andtheheartharesmall,whichmayindicatethat
themainactivitiesassociatedwithmealprepara-
tion,breadbakingandfoodstuffprocessingmust
havetakenplaceinthecourtyardwheremanyfire
installationswerelocated.
Theremainsofanimalbonesconsistedofbones
ofsmallruminantsandpigatcomparablepercent-
ages.Mostpigbonescamefromoneanimalkilled
ataveryyoungageofapprox.4-6months.They
wereunearthedintheeasternpartoftheroom,
whereasmallovenwasalsodiscovered.Itseems
thatthepigwasroastedintheovenoroveriton
aroastingspitsupportedontheoven’swalls.
Therelativelylargenumberofflintfindsis
worthattention.BothusagephasesofroomL12
haveyielded6flintsand1obsidian.Flintand
obsidiantoolsmayhavebeenusedformealprepa-
rationandforprocessingvariousproducts,much
likethegrinderfoundintheearlierphase.Italso
needstobeconsideredthatflintandobsidiantools
