locallevel.Itisalsoworthunderscoringthatthestateofestates,

whereindividualestatesexercisedseparaterightsandweredifferently

organized,wasaverygoodgroundforthegrowthofsuchself-

government.

ThissecondEnglisheditionofthebookislargelyduetothe

unﬂagginginterestinthehistoryandcultureofthePolishJews.That

interestisnotamerefad,butaphenomenonthathasbecome

apermanentfeatureofhistoricalwriting.Thereisalsoanoticeable

trendforscholars,whoareincreasinglybetterpreparedintermsof

researchtoolsandlanguage,tofocusonthatareaofstudy.Which

translatesintoanewperceptionoftheplaceandroleoftheJews
