beenfollowed,andintheHebrewtextsthemodifiedtranscriptionof
EncyclopaediaJudaica.
TheHebrewlettersalefandayinhavenot
beenmarkedatallexceptwheretheymaystandforalongvowel
thentwotranscribedvowelsareseparatedbyanapostrophe.No
distinctionismadebetweentethandtaf,kafandkof,samekhandsin.
Theletterheisrepresentedash,andḥetas,khafaskh.Theletter
tsadeisrepresentedasts.Whenitdischargesthefunctionofmater
lectionisattheendoftheword,theletterheisrepresentedash.Sheva
isfeaturedasshorteonlyifitisprecededbyaconjunctionor
pronounswhicharewrittenjointly,theonlyexceptionwasmadefor
thewordswhichalreadyfunctionintheEnglishlanguageandare
transcribedotherwise(tefilah).Thecapitalletterisusedonlyin
thefirstwordofthetitleofapublishedwork.Inordertomakethem
adequatelylegible,thearticle,preposition,conjunctionand
therelativepronounarewrittenjointlywiththewordtheyare
followedbyandareseparatedbyahyphen(mi-she-oved).
Theonlyderogationsfromtheadoptedruleshavebeenallowedin
thetermswhichoperateintheEnglishlanguageandaretranscribed
otherwise(e.g.,bar-mitzvaorchallah).
Duetothespecificityofthiswork’ssubjectmatterthereisalarge
numberofHebrewandYiddishterms.Thisiswhytheyhavebeen
printedinantique(ifnotinitalicsforeditorialreasons),including
thosethathavenotbeenassimilatedbyEnglish.IntheIndexat
theendofthebook(withthenamesofthings,peopleand
geographicalplaces)markedinboldarethepageswhereexplanations
