INTRODUCTION
Thisbookfeaturesthemechanismsunderlyingtheoperationof
Jewishcommunitiesandthepoliciespursuedbycommunity
authoritiesinearlymodemtimes.Thecommunitiesfeaturedare
PoznańandSwarzędz.Althoughauthoritywasmainlyexercisedin
acommunitybythekahalanditsofficials,therabbi,brotherhoods,
andcraftsmen’sguildswerealsoinvolvedinthecommunity’s
management.Thepurposeofthisworkisalsotohighlightthemutual
interdependenciesbetweenallofthesegroups.
ItisbynomeansaccidentalthatWielkopolska(GreatPoland)has
beenchosenasanexample.Thisregion,importantindemographic
andculturalterms,wastheareaoftheearliestJewishsettlementin
Polishlands.JerzyTopolskidescribedWielkopolska’sunique
socioeconomicstructure.[1]Agricultureandindustryshapedthearea’s
economy(withthegrangecateringtothedomesticmarketratherthan
toexportsacrosstheBalticSea,withnobilitymoreinclinedtoinvest,
withhighlydevelopedsheepbreedingandtextileindustry,woolen
clothproductioninparticular,andwithahighshareofurban
population,apositivetradebalance,andahighshareofpecuniary
rentinpeasants’performancestotheirlords).Wielkopolskawas
mainlyinhabitedbymediumnobilityandtherewerenolargemagnate
estates,typicaloftheeasternregionsofthePolish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth.OwingtoWielkopolska’sspecificity,thenatureof
Jewishsettlementinthisregionwasdistinctlydifferentfromthatin
otherregions:Jewsmainlysettledintowns,[2]takingupsuchtypical
urbanoccupationsastradeandcrafts.Hencejobswhichhadbeen
stereotypicallyassociatedwiththecommonplaceunderstandingof
aJew’srole,suchasaninnkeeperorarrendator,accountedforasmall
percentageofprofessionstakenupbytheWielkopolskaJews.[3]
Lastbutnotleast,quitealargenumberofsurvivingsource
materialsregardingJewishcommunitiescomefromthePoznańand
Swarzędzcommunities.Theyaremainlyhandwrittencommunity
books,whicharecalledpinkasim,ofwhichonlyafewhavesurvived
untiltodayandwhicharethereforeuniqueandpriceless.
