ocesanlevel.Theaimwastodemonstratehowjudicialdutiesofdiocesan
vicarswerereflectedinthecompositionoftheirofficia(offices),aswellas
determinethedivisionofcasesheardbydiocesanvicarsinappellateand
firstinstanceproceedings,identifytransformationsinthatareaandestablish
whichfactorsinducedthosechanges.Forthispurpose,legalsourceswere
analysed;thelatterwerealsosupposedtoyieldinformationaboutcrucial
momentswhentherulesofadjudicatingdisputesbyvicarsincourtproceed-
ingsbecamestable.Meanwhile,non-legalsourcesservedprimarilytopro-
videcasesofjudicialdutiesbeingexercisedbyvicarsanddemonstratehow
thelatter’sjudiciarywasseenbytheircontemporaries.
Theauthoralsoadoptedtheassumptionthatitwouldbepossibleto
statewhichareasthatarecurrentlyregulatedbythenormsofsubstantive
andprocedurallawweresubjecttothemostextensivemodificationwithin
theframeworkofvicars’judiciary.39
Priortotheanalysisofthejudiciaryofdiocesanvicars,theirstanding
withinimperialadministrationisdiscussed.Inthefirstplace,theauthor
determinestheirpositionamongothercivilservants,especiallytheirrela-
tionshipswithpraetorianprefects(Chapter2.1).Theworksubsequently
discussestheissueoftheirtitulatureinconnectionwiththechangesofdioc-
esanorganizationto535,thusenablingtheauthorthedeterminethemo-
mentwhenvicars’officeshadbecomeconsolidated(Chapter2.2).Diocese
administratorswithdifferentstatusarediscussedseparately(Chapter2.3).
ChaptersThree,FourandFiveareentirelydevotedtoanalysisoftheju-
diciaryofdiocesaninthelightofallavailablehistoricalsources.Chapter
Threebeginswithanoutlineofalltypesofvicars’dutieswithparticular
focusontheexceptionalnatureoftheirfunctionasmilitarycommanders
(Chapter3.1).Thefollowingsubchapter(Chapter3.2)discussestheoffices
(officia)ofvicars,whichensuredthestabilityofdiocesanadministrationgiv-
enthefrequentchangesonthepostofheadadministrator(Chapter3.2).
Themostextensivepartoftheworkisdevotedtothecruciallegal
sources-imperialconstitutions(Chapters4.1-4.2)-whichrepresentkey
sourcesconsideringthediscussedtopic.Byandlarge,theiranalysisfollows
