moresoananalysisaccordingtothemodernsystematicsofcriminaland
civillaw)wouldimposeacontemporaryperception.Inviewofthefragmen-
tarinessofthesurvivingsources,suchanapproach,albeitcorrectintermsof
methodology,wouldnotrendertheessenceoftheantiqueunderstanding
oftheroleplayedbythejudiciaryofdiocesanvicarsandwouldencourage
conclusionscorrespondingwiththepresentdayclassifications.
Separatesubchaptersprovideananalysisofsectionsfromimperialcon-
stitutionsconcerningthejudiciaryofthediocesanvicarsintheCodexTheodo-
sianusandthevital,giventhediscussedtopic,firstNovelofMarcianof450
(Nov.Marc.1),andintheCodexIustinianusof534,aswellastheJustinian

theirjurisdiction.Eachofthesubchaptersconcludeswithatablewhichre-

Inordertoarriveatacomprehensivepictureofthejudiciaryofthedioc-
esanvicars,non-legalsourcesareanalysedaswell(Chapter5).Inthe
separatesubchapterstheirjudicialcapacitiesareexaminedinthelightof
iconographicsources-therepresentationsoftheinsigniaofauthority,pre-
servedinNotitiadignitatumaswellasinthelightofothersources,i.e.liter-
aryandepigraphicsources.Generalconclusionsareprecedesbyabrief
presentationofthepremisesandtheformofadministrativereformeffected
byJustinianIin535whichabolishedvicariates,aswellassubsequenttrans-
formationsofsupra-provincialadministrationduringthereignofthatruler
(Chapter6).
Theconvictionthatthejudiciarywasacrucialbranchofstateaffairshad
animpactontheselectionofstaffforimperialadministration,alsoatdiocese
level.Duetothefactthatpersonaltraitsofprovinceadministratorswere
amajorcriterionwhichguidedemperorsintheirappointments,thework
reliestoasubstantialextentonthefindingsofprosopographicresearch.41At
times,Iattemptedtodrawindependentconclusionsinthatrespect,drawing
onthepreviousresearchexperienceandresultsinthatfield.42Atthispoint,
Iwouldpermitmyselfcertaindetailedremarksrelatingtothetopic
addressedinthework,whichduetothetheirgeneralnaturecouldnotbe
includedinanyotherpartofthestudy.
