Inthissection,Taylor’s(2002;2004)approachtoconstructionswillbe
reviewed.Hisviewsonthedimensionsalongwhichconstructionsvary
willservetointroducetheworkingdefinitionofHconstruction”usedin
thepresentstudy.Tayloridentifiesfourdimensions:schematicity,pro
ductivity,idiomaticity,andentrenchment.
1.6.1.Schematicity
Schematicityisthepropertyofmoregeneralconstructionswhoseusein
volvesincorporationofvariableitems.Schematicconstructionsarethose
which,unlikefullyspecifiedstructures,compriseemptyslots.Schematic
constructionscanhavemorethanoneinstantiation.Forexample,the
expressions(from)doortodoor,(from)covertocover,(from)mouthtomouth
andothersimilarcasesarerelatedbothbyacommonsemanticpatern
andthesamesyntacticframe.Thecommonalitypresentinallofthemis
capturedbytheschematicformula[(from)XtoX].Otherwise,fullyspeci
fiedstructureslikeonce-overinthesenseofIaquicklookorappraisal’
arenon-schematic.Thecomponentsofthestructurearenotsubjectto
replacementtoproducerelatedinstantiationsoftheconstruction.
1.6.2.Productivity
Arelatedbutseparatepropertyofconstructions,productivityisthe
degreetowhichaschematicconstructioncanyieldnewinstantiations.
Whilesomeverygeneralconstructionsarealmostcompletelyproduc
tive(likethetransitiveconstruction),othersarerestricted.Forexample,
Taylorshowsthatevenveryschematicconstructions,suchas[XbyX],
arelimitedintermsoftheirproductivity.The[XbyX]constructionis
realizedinsomeestablishedinstantiationslikedaybyday,onebyone,
pagebypage,stepbystep,orpiecebypiece,butthe[XbyX]schemadoes
notalwaysyieldacceptableinstantiations:severalbyseveralorspendone!s
inheritance,chequebycheque(Taylor,2004,p.62).
