automatedcorpora,whichmakeitpossibletoconfronttheorizingwith
evidence(Stefanowitsch,2006).Nowadays,analysesofcorpusdataare
used,amongotherthings,toillustratethemagnitudeofperipheryorthe
blurreddivisionbetweenthelexiconandsyntax.
However,corpusdataarerarelymarshaledtoquestionthenewpost-
-generativeviews,evenfairlyimplausibleones,suchasthebeliefinhighly
semanticizedclosed-classconstructions(Szcześniak,2013).Theobjective
ofthiscontributionistoatempttoreconcilecurrentandtraditionalGener-
ativeGrammarmodels.Whilethegenerativeassumptionsaboutlanguage
mayhavebeensimplistic,itisunlikelythattheyareallwrong.Rejecting
themprematurelymaybethrowingoutthebabywiththebathwater.Half
acenturyaferthebeginningofthegenerativetraditionseemslikeagood
momenttotakestockandconsidertheopposingviews,evaluatetheir
relativemeritsandshortcomings,andfindcommonground.Thisstudy
ofgrammaticalconstructionslikethex!sway,incredulityconstruction,or
theinto-gerundconstructionaddressesthefollowingquestions:
