Thepresentstudywillatempttoanswertheabovequestionsbyfocus-
ingmainlyononecontestedissue,namelythatofthedivisionbetween
syntaxandthelexicon.Itisagainstthebackdropofthesyntax-lexicon
continuumthatwewillconsiderthesemanticcontentandformalchar-
acteristicsofgrammaticalconstructions.Justlikeincreasedreliance
oncorpusdatahelpedrevisitgenerativeviewsonlanguage,heretoo,
previouslyunavailabledataontheuseofgrammaticalconstructionswill
beprovidedtoquestionsomeofthemorerecentcognitiveviewsonthe
semanticcapacityofclosed-classformsandthedivisionbetweenthe
modulesofthelexiconandsyntax.
1.1.TraditionalDistinction
Ithastraditionallybeenassumedthatlanguagenaturallysegregates
itsformsintotwomajorsuperclasses,onecontaininglexicalcategories
likenounsandadjectives,thatis,formswithrichlexicalmeanings,and
theotherincludinggrammaticalcategorieslikearticles,pronounsor
conjunctions,classesthatdonotsomuchhavemeaningsasfunctions
orrelationalcontent.Thebeliefinthedivisionisjustifiedbyalonglist
ofdistinguishingfeaturesthatsetthetwoclassesapart,whichwillbe
discussedbelow.Forexample,theverynamesthatthetwoclassesare
knownby,open-andclosed-classforms,reflecttheobservationthatthe
formerreadilyacceptnewmembers,whilethelatertendtoresistnew
additions.Inconsequence,open-classformsareordersofmagnitude
morenumerous,numberinginthetensorevenhundredsofthousands
ofitems,thanclosed-classformswhosenumbersdonotexceedafew
hundred.
Thedistinctionhasclassicaloriginsandfollowsstraightforwardly
fromtheintuitivesensethatthelexiconisseparatefromgrammar.This

(syndesmos)Hconjunctions,”bywhichheunderstoodalargecategory
