forcefully;andNorthKoreaconductednuclearandballisticmissiletestsas
recentlyasJanuaryandFebruary2016.TherealityisthatAsiansarealsotoo
busydealingwiththeproblemsintheirownregion,andgenerallydonotpay
muchattentiontotheproblemswithwhichEuropeansarenowpreoccupied.
Thatsaid,however,wearealsobeginningtoseemoresimilaritiesbetween
theEuropeanandAsiansecuritylandscapes,andthetworegionssharean
increasingnumberofcommonsecuritychallenges,mainlycausedbythose
whoarepreparedtochangethestatusquobyforceorcoercion,namelyRussia
andChina.Inaddition,theincreasingsimilaritiesbetweenthesituations
inEuropeandAsiameanthetwoareusingmorecommonterminologyto
describetheirchallenges.

TheforthcomingWarsawsummitwillbethetimetoassesstheEnhanced
OpportunitiesProgram(EOP),whichwasintroducedattheWalessummit
in2014.Inthefollowingitisarguedthat,duetothehighdegreeofsecurity
interdependenceintheBalticSeaarea,andthedegreeofinteroperability
gainedbySwedenandFinland,regionalcooperationbetweenNATO,
SwedenandFinlandshouldbedeepenedfurther,therebystrengthening
securityandstabilityinastrategicallycrucialregionfortheAlliance.Given
thatneitherSwedennorFinlandislikelytoapplyforNATOmembership
anytimesoon,NATOshoulddevelop“extendedcooperativesecurity.”
Suchcooperationincludesnotonlythemilitarydimension,suchascommon
situationalawareness,exercisesandimprovedpartnerrepresentationinthe
militarystructure,butalsoelaborationofpoliticalconsultationmechanisms,
toassurecommonassessmentsandarapidresponsetosituationsthatmay
arise.
