Introduction

factthatsomeelementsofahigher-levelsystemmayconstituteasystemin
themselves.Thismethodhasbeencharacterisedinthescienticliteratureon
manyoccasions,6soitisnotnecessarytopresentitindetailhere.
Thewholestudywasbasedonthreepillars:analysisofliterature(Polish
andGerman),analysisoflegalacts(Polish,GermanandPrussian)andarchival
researchconductedindierentareasofthePrussianKingdom,including
Brandenburg.
AstheaimofthebookistoshowtheconnectionsbetweenthePrussian
andPolishregisters,theanalysisfocusedmainlyonthelegalstate,whichwas
takenoverbytheSecondRepublic.Thediscussiondoesnot,therefore,include
adetailedpresentationofallprovisionsandtheirchangesconcerningpublic
registersintheKingdomofPrussia.Chronologically,theseareprimarilylegal
solutionsthatwereintroducedinthesecondhalfofthe19thcentury.Olderlaws
willbediscussedonlyinsofarasthisisimportantforthelecture.
Theapplicationofthesystemanalysismethodisreectedinthelayoutused
inthework.Chapter1presentstheproblemofpublicregistersinageneralway,
takingintoaccountboththeirtheoryandthehistoryofpublicregistersuntilthe
endofthe19thcentury.
Therstpartofthemonographpresentspublicregistersofanadministrative
natureidentiedinPrussianlaw.Theseregistersare:theregistersofmarital
status(Chapter2),thecadastre(Chapter3)andtheregisterskeptbythePatent
OceinBerlin-theregisterofutilitymodels,thepatentregisterandthe
trademarkregister(Chapter4).
Thesecondpart,ontheotherhand,presentstheregisterskeptbythecourts.
SomewhatcontrarytoPrussiandoctrine,butinlinewithcontemporaryviews,
therstchapterofthispart(Chapter5)presentsthelandregisters(theequivalent
oftoday’slandregisters).Thisisfollowedbyadescriptionofthecommercial
registeranditsderivatives,i.e.theregisterofcooperatives,associationsandwater
cooperatives(Chapter6).Next,theregistersforsea-goingandinlandwaterway
vesselsarepresented(Chapter7).Thelastchapterofthissectiondescribesother
smallerregisters,i.e.theregisterofdesigns,theregisterofmatrimonialproperty
rightsandthestockexchangeregister(Chapter8).
