conspiraciesweresecretinthearmyandintheschools,sedi-
tiousthoughtsunderapeasant’sgarbandunderamonk’shood:
theairwasheavyandoppressiveinWarsawlikebeforeagreat
thunderstorm;everyoneexpecteditandnoneknewfromwhence
itwouldcome;andallthewhileeverythingwassplendidlyap-
parelled,lavishandclamorous,asifthedayswerethoseoffelic-
ityandjubilation.[ł]Andtheuniversity[inWarsaw]wasdif-
ferentfrominKraków,too:there,ateacherandpupilcouldbe
recognizedonlybecauseonewassittingonachair,andtheotherat
adesk;inWarsawtherewasmilitarydrilleverywhereandinevery-
thing,theteacher(Figs.10a.b)andthepupilswereinuniforms,and
coppersstoodby.TeGrandDuke,whohadbarelyasnubofanose,
yetstuckiteverywhere,meddledinthealairsoftheUniversity,
caughtpupils,threwtheminthelockup,utteredterriblethreats;
