KsawerySzaniawski,whotranslatedtheNapoleonicCodeintoPolish,is

believedtohaveestablishedtheSchoolofLaw.Onlysomeoftheclasses

inlawwereheldintheKazimierzowskiPalace[namedafterKingJan

Kazimierz),whichsoonbecamethemainUniversitybuilding;theothers

battlingﬁercelytodefenditsborders.MaurycyMochnacki,whoseties

withtheUniversitymusthavebeenweak,consideringhisbanishmentin

1822,wroteinhisPowstanienarodupolskiegowroku1830i1831[Te

RiseofthePolishNationintheyears1830and1831]:KTeUniversity

ofWarsawcouldnotbeasimportantforgeneralediﬁcationinPoland

astheCentralSchoolinVilniuswas[ł],theWarsawschoolwasan

institutionwhichsuppliedthecountrywithadministrativeandjudicial

ofcialsratherthananacademicorpoliticalbody”.7Tisopinion,if

notentirelyaccurate,demonstratestowhatextenttheFacultyofLaw

wasalreadyadecisiveelementinthewaytheUniversitywasperceived

anditsimportancewithintheUniversity’sstructure,whichcontinuesto

thisday.Inanotherpartofhisbook,Mochnackiadmitted,thuscon-

tradictingtheformerview:KWarsawistheheartofoureducation,from

whenceitsraysenlightenthewholeofPoland.”

roku[PlanforpubliceducationintheDuchyofWarsawin1810],Staszic

suggestedsettingupaCentralSchoolinWarsawwithﬁvefaculties:Law,

Administration,Philosophy,LiteratureandMedicine.Afullcourseof

studyineachfacultywastotakethreeyears.TeFacultyofLiterature

wastoalsocompriseKtheFacultyofFineArtsunderoneDean”.8Tefact

thatAntoniBrodowskiwassenttostudyinParismayhavebeenlinked

totheplanstoestablishsuchafaculty.Tescholarshipforhisstudies,

whichweretotakeseveralyears,wasfundedbytheDuchy’sChamber
