Preface
“AnAnalysisoftheHigherEducationSystemsofTeachingChineseasaForeign
LanguageinPolandandChina”presentsacomparisonofeducationalpracticesin
teachingChineseasaforeignlanguage(ChFL)inChinaandinanon-nativecon-
textofPoland.TheauthorputsforwardsomeideastoimproveChFLinstruction.

MaterialCultureinCALL,”whichtreatsinformationandcommunicationtech-
nologies(ICT)asrepresentingdigitalcultureartifacts,asignificantpartofmate-
rialculture.Theauthordemonstratestheirroleinteachingforeignlanguagesand
aimstofindrelationsbetweenlanguageteachers’accesstodigitaldevices,their
perceptionsoftheusefulnessofICTinforeignlanguagelearningandteaching,
andtheactualuseofdigitalmaterialsintheirownlanguageteaching,andbe-
yondtheclassroomfornon-professionaluses.Thenexttextintroducesthetheme
ofauthenticforeignlanguageteachingmaterialsasSalamaEmbarkin“Some
LibyaEFLUniversityStudents’AttitudestowardsUsingAuthenticMaterialsfor
ReadingClasses”investigatestheattitudesofLibyanEnglishforeignlanguage
(EFL)universitystudentstowardsauthenticmaterialsusedinFLinstruction.The
authorbelievesthatauthenticmaterialsnotonlypresentaninvaluablesourceas
languageinput,butfirstandforemostconstituteastrongmotivatorforlearners
intheirendeavourtobecomefluentFLusers.Aninterestingandinfrequently
researchedissueofteachers’foreignlanguageattritionispresentedinthetext
byTeresaMariaWłosowicz“EnglishLanguageAttritioninTeachers:Questions
ofLanguageProficiency,LanguageMaintenance,andLanguageAttitudes.”The
authordiscussestheoccurrenceofforeignlanguageattritioninnon-nativeEnglish
languageteachersandpresentstheresultsofanempiricalstudyofitsmanifesta-
tionatthelevelofadvancedvocabularyandstructures.Italsocommentsonthe
participants’attitudestolinguisticcorrectnessandtheirautonomousstrategiesof
languagemaintenance.Finally,MariaStec’sarticle“MultimodalityofCultural
ContentinELTMaterialsforYoungLearners”dealswithEnglishnon-authentic
didacticmaterialsbutthistimefromtheperspectiveoftheirvalueascultural
artifactsthatcanbeusedsuccessfullyinearlylanguageeducation.Sheidenti-
fiesthemostimportantaspectsrelatedtoteachingelementsofEnglishculture
asrepresentedinEnglishcoursebooksforyounglearners.
