Theanalysiswasbasedonimagoformsof73
speciesofpsyllidsandencompassedthemaking
of2.500figuresofthemorphologicalstructures
ofthethoraxusingaSEMmicroscope.59spe-
cies,ofwhichhigh-qualityphotographswere
taken,wereselectedforthedescriptionofthorax
morphologyandphylogenyofPsylloidea(Ta-
ble1).Thespecieswereselectedinsuchaway
astorepresentallfamilies,subfamiliesandtribes
currentlydistinguishedinthePsylloideasuper-
familyinaccordancewiththeBurckhardt,
Ouvrard(2012)classificationwithfurtheral-
terations(Burckhardt,Queiroz2013).No
materialfromthreemonotypesubfamilies(At-
metocraniinae,Metapsyllinae,Symphorosinae)
classifiedasmembersoftheCalophydiaefamily
andtwomonotypetribes(Diceraopsylliniand
Synozini)fromtheHomotomidaefamilywas
obtained.Theanalysiswasbasedonbothun-
publisheddataandresultsthathadalreadybeen
publishedbytheauthor.
Adultpsyllidswerecollectedwithanentomo-
logicalsweep-netandkilledinvapoursofpotas-
siumcyanide.Afterremovingthewingsandlegs,
thespecimensweremountedonastubforthe
analysisinalowvacuumelectronscanningmi-
croscope.Driedinsectsoninspectpinshadtheir
wingsandlegsremovedandweresubsequently
takenoffthepinsandstuckdirectlytoanalu-
miniumtableusingcarbontapeorwerestuck
toaglassplateandthentothealuminiumtable.
Incaseswhentheinsectswerekeptaswetcol-
lections,storedinalcohol,beforeremovingthe
appendicesandstickingtothetabletheyhadto
undergopreservationprocessesusing3%phos-
phatebufferedglutaraldehyde,rinsingwithphos-
phatebufferanddehydrationinalcoholseries.
ThespecimensweresubsequentlydriedinCPD
(CriticalPointDrying).Allproceduresforthe
preparationofinsectsforanalysesusingaSEM
microscopewereconductedintheDepartment
ofZoology,ScanningMicroscopyLaboratory
oftheFacultyofBiologyandEnvironmental
ProtectionoftheUniversityofSilesiaandthe
ScanningMicroscopyLaboratoryoftheJagiel-
lonianUniversityinCracow.Theinsectsdidnot
undergoultrasonicwashingasthespecimens
weredamagedthatway.Theinsectsalsoweren
notsputter-coatedwithgold(thiswouldmake
thephotographicaldocumentationimpossible
usingtheproposedmethods).Usingascanning
microscope,eachspecimenwasanalyzedfrom
thedorsal,ventralandsideplanes.Toachieve
that,HitachiS-3400Nscanningelectronmicro-
scopesoftheScanningMicroscopyLaboratory
attheMuseumandInstituteofZoology,Polish
AcademyofSciences,Warsaw,andScanning
MicroscopyLaboratoryattheSilesianUniversity
ofTechnology’sInstituteofMaterialsScienceof
theFacultyofMaterialsEngineeringandMetal-
lurgyoftheSilesianUniversityofTechnologyin
Gliwicewereused.Priortotheanalysisusingthe
scanningmicroscope,theinsectswereanalyzed
usingaNikonMZ1500stereoscopicmicroscope.
CorelPhoto-PaintX5softwarewasusedforthe
graphicaleditingofdiagramsandphotographs.
Thecladisticanalysiswasconductedusingthe
followingmethodsandassumptions:
