ABSTRACT:
Tepapertakesacognitive-culturalviewof(in)fidelityintranslation.Since
ithasbeenconvincinglyarguedthatCognitiveLinguistics(CL)caninformthestudyof
translation,weadoptthemethodologyandconceptualtoolsofCL,includingitsmajor
tenetofmeaningasconceptualisation.WeexplorethisproblemusingJulianofNorwich’s
lateMiddleEnglishShewings,inwhichtheanchoressrecountshervisionaryexperiences.
TereligioustextisrepletewithsymbolicrevelationsinterspersedwithJulian’sattemptsat
theirinterpretation.Inouranalysis,weexplorehowlinguisticimageryisre-constructed
intherenderingofthelate-medievaltextbyMirabaiStarr.

aCognitiveLinguistic(CL)perspectiveonthequestionof(in)fidelityin
renderinghistorical,religioustexts.Insodoing,wesetouttoconsider
theimplicationsofacognitively-orientedapproachtoequivalence,one
ofthefundamentalnotionsinTranslationStudies(TS).
RojoandIbarretexe-Antufiano(2013,3)elucidatethatforalong
timetherelationshipbetweenlinguisticsandthefieldoftransla-
tionresearchwasa“love-hate”one,whichinpartresultedfromthe
priorityassignedtothestudyofthelinguisticsystem,ratherthan
languageuse.However,afertheyearswhensuchprescriptivepre-
vailed,approachestotranslationinwhichlinguisticshadasuperior
status,theculturalturnin
TS
thatoccurredinthe1980sand1990s
