Oneofthedevelopmentsthatcontributedtothatredefinitionwasthe
emergenceofCLwithitstenetsofembodiedcognitionandmeaningas
conceptualisation.Teformerinvolvedtherecognitionofhumanem-
bodiedexperiencefortheconstrualofmeaning,whilethelatterallowed
tobringtogethercognition,culture,andcommunicationbasedonthe
ideasoftheperspectivalandencyclopaedicnatureoflinguisticmeaning.
Toughofendescribedasanenterprise,ratherthanauniformframe-
work,CLhasmanagedtoincorporatediferentstrandsofresearchby
integratingscholarsinterestedinthestudyofreallinguisticusage,the
guidingprincipleofwhichistheprimacyofsemantics.
Inthisway,theculturalturn,withitsemphasisontheculturalcontext
inwhichtranslationoccurs,dovetailedwiththeemergenceofCL.From
a
CL
viewpoint,themajorideabehindtheturn,that“wedonottranslate
wordsasindividualwords,orevenwordsaspartsofatext,butthatwe
lookatthewordsasperformingacertainroleinacertaincultureand
translatethemaccordingly”(Wróblewski2015,111),seemsonlynatural.
Indeed,inviewofthecurrentstateofresearchattheintersectionofCL
andTS,theideathattheoperationalunitoftranslationisculture,rath-
erthanastringofwords,maywellberegardedascommonplace.1For
instance,inoneoftherecentCLapproachestotranslation,Lewandow-
ska-Tomaszczyk(2015)invokesLangacker’snotionofconstrual,and
explainsthat
whattheconceptualizerpresentsinhermessageisherconstrualofthe
world.ThetermconstrualisusedhereinthesenseofLangacker(1987),
whereitisdefinedasutherelationbetweenthespeaker(orhearer)
andthesituationthatheconceptualizesorportrays”(Langacker1987:
487-488).Translation,incognitivisttermsthen,canbeconceivedof
asreconceptualizationofa
SL
messageinthetotalityofitscontext
