Baranauskaset.al.,2021madeinvestigateandevaluatethebodycom-
position,thephysicalworkingcapacity,thenutrionintake,andblood
parametersofironandvitaminDintheLithuanianhigh-performancedeaf
women’sbasketballteamplayers.Tefemaleathletes(n=14)oftheLithua-
niandeafbasketballteamaged26.4±4.5yearswererecruitedforanobser-
vationalcross-sectionalstudy.A7-dayfoodrecallsurveymethodwasused
toinvestigatetheiractualdiet.Temeasurementsofthebodycomposi-
tionwereperformedusingtheBIA(bioelectricalimpedanceanalysis)tet-
ra-polarelectrodes.Inordertoassessthecardiorespiratoryandaerobicfit-
nesslevelsofathletes,ergo-spirometry(onacycleergometer)wasused
tomeasurethepeakoxygenuptake(VO2peak)andthephysicalworking
capacityataheartrateof170beatsperminute(PWC170).Teathletes’
bloodtestsweretakentoinvestigatetheredbloodcells,hemoglobin,
25-hydroxyvitaminD,ferritin,transferrin,ironconcentrations,andtotal
iron-bindingcapacity(TIBC).TeconsiderationoftheVO2peak(55.9±
6.1mL/min/kgofbodyweight,95%CI:51.8,58.9)andthelowVO2peak
(56-60mL/min/kgofbodyweight)(p=0.966)inthedeafwomen’sbas-
ketballteamplayersrevealednodińerences.Forthedeaffemaleathletes,
thePWC170wasequalto20.3±2.0kgm/min/kgofbodyweightandrep-
resentedonlytheaverageaerobicfitnesslevel.Tecarbohydrateandpro-
teinintakes(5.0±1.3and1.3±0.3g/kgofbodyweight,respectively)met
onlytheminimumlevelsrecommendedforathletes.Tefatcontentofthe
diet(38.1±4.1%ofenergyintake)exceededthemaximumrecommended
content(35%ofenergyintake)(p=0.012).Temeanbloodserumconcen-
trationsof25(OH)Dandferritin(24.1±6.6nmol/Land11.0±4.1µg/L,
respectively)predictedvitaminDandirondeficitsinathletes.Femaleath-
leteshadanincreasedriskofvitaminDandirondeficiencies.Regardlessof
irondeficiencyinthebody,thebettercardiorespiratoryfitnessofthedeaf
femaleathleteswasessentiallycorrelatedwiththehigherskeletalmuscle
mass(intermsofsize)(r=0.61,p=0.023),thelowerpercentageofbody
fatmass(r=-0.53,p=0.049),andthereducedintakeoffat(r=-0.57,
p=0.040).
