2.1AmanofthehouseofLeviwentandtookadaughterofLeviashis
wife.2.2Thewomanconceived,andboreason.Whenshesawthat
hewasafinechild,shehidhimthreemonths.2.3Whenshecould
nolongerhidehim,shetookapapyrusbasketforhim,andcoated
itwithtarandwithpitch.Sheputthechildinit,andlaiditinthereeds
bytheriver’sbank.2.4Hissisterstoodfaroff,toseewhatwould
bedonetohim.2.5Pharaoh’sdaughtercamedowntobatheattheriver.
Hermaidenswalkedalongbytheriverside.Shesawthebasketamong
thereeds,andsentherservanttogetit.2.6Sheopenedit,andsawthe
child,andbehold,thebabycried.Shehadcompassiononhim,and
said,“ThisisoneoftheHebrews’children.”
2.7ThenhissistersaidtoPharaoh’sdaughter,“ShouldIgoandcall
anurseforyoufromtheHebrewwomen,thatshemaynursethechild
foryou?”
2.8Pharaoh’sdaughtersaidtoher,“Go.”
Themaidenwentandcalledthechild’smother.2.9Pharaoh’sdaughter
saidtoher,“Takethischildaway,andnursehimforme,andIwill
giveyouyourwages.”
Thewomantookthechild,andnursedit.2.10Thechildgrew,andshe
broughthimtoPharaoh’sdaughter,andhebecameherson.Shenamed
himMoses,[“Moses”soundsliketheHebrewfor“drawout”.]and
said,“BecauseIdrewhimoutofthewater.”
2.11Inthosedays,whenMoseshadgrownup,hewentouttohis
brothers,andlookedattheirburdens.HesawanEgyptianstriking
aHebrew,oneofhisbrothers.2.12Helookedthiswayandthatway,
andwhenhesawthattherewasnoone,hekilledtheEgyptian,andhid
himinthesand.
2.13Hewentoutthesecondday,andbehold,twomenoftheHebrews
werefightingwitheachother.Hesaidtohimwhodidthewrong,
“Whydoyoustrikeyourfellow?”
2.14Hesaid,“Whomadeyouaprinceandajudgeoverus?Doyouplan
tokillme,asyoukilledtheEgyptian?”
Moseswasafraid,andsaid,“Surelythisthingisknown.”2.15Now
whenPharaohheardthisthing,hesoughttokillMoses.ButMosesfled
