Whatisthe“Europeanhome”today?
Summary
Thestudyisbasedontheassumptionthatlanguageandculturearemostclosely
connectedattheaxiologicallevel.Attentionispaidtovaluetermsasculturalconcepts,
withtheirexplicationsintheformofmaximal,multi-aspectualcognitivedefinitions,
asproposedincognitiveethnolinguistics.Extendeddefinitionsor“narratives”ofthis
kindare“textsofculture”inthesenseoftheMoscow-TartuSchool:theycontainrecords
ofsociallyentrenchedknowledgeandbeliefs,aswellasreferencestonormsandvalues
professedbythespeakingsubject.Thisapproachisillustratedusingthemetaphorof
Europeashome.Ananalysisofbothculturalconceptsinseverallanguages(12for
Europeand18forhome)leadsonetoconcludethatthemappingsfromhome(source
domain)toEurope(targetdomain)areselectiveandbasedontheimageofanideal
(or“true”)home,withitsatmosphereoffamilylife,securityandfeeling-at-home,rather
thanthetypical(orreal)home.Thephysicalaspectisactivatedintheprocessof
metaphorisationtoalimitedextent,inconnectionwith“buildingtheEuropeanhome”.
Incontemporaryxenophobicdiscourse,thesemanticsofhomealsoactivatesthenegative
featureof“separationfromtheoutside”:Europahaus,interpretedasFestungEuropa
“fortress”withitsimplicationsofthegate,walls,etc.,becomesatoolofdefenceagainst
aninvasionofstrangers.
