Lexicalbundlesinacademicdiscourse
Theaimofthechapteristoanalyzethefrequencyofoccurrenceandfunctions
oflexicalbundlesinacademicprosewrittenbynativeandnon-nativestu-
dents.ThedataareculledfromacorpusofBAandMAtheseswrittenbyPolish
studentsofEnglishPhilology(acorpusofca.1mlntokensinsize)andacor-
pusofacademicdiscoursewrittenbyBritishstudentsofBAandMAcourses
(acorpusofca.6mlntokens).Drawingontheanalysisconductedinlinewith
themethodologyofferedbycorpuslinguistics,ithasbeenobservedthat:(1)
thetextswrittenbyPolishMAstudents,unliketextswrittenbyBAstudents,
tosomeextentresemblenative-likediscourseintermsoftheuseandfunction
oflexicalbundles;(2)inallcorporaunderscrutinythemostoft-usedbundles
arethoseusedinthefunctionofreference;(3)inBAthesesthestancebundles
areoverrepresentedincomparisontotextswrittenbythenatives,which
makesthetextssimilartospokendiscoursestylistics;(4)thesesontranslation
studiescontainmorebundlesthanthesesonmethodsinTEFL;(5)lexicalbun-
dlesinMAtheseshaveahigherdispersionvaluethaninBAtheses.Insum,
MAtheseshavemorefeaturesofnativeacademicprosethanBAtheses.The
resultsmaybeusedassuggestionsregardingtheteachingofacademicdis-
courseinEnglishPhilologycourses.
