1993andwasthefirstdictionaryofthistypedesignedforlearnersof
Polishasaforeignlanguage.Itwasaddressedbothtobeginnersand
tothosewhowantedtobroadentheirknowledgeofPolishvocabulary.
Allentriesofthedictionaryweredefinedbypictures.Thankstothis
techniqueitwaspossibletoavoidmanyproblemswithdefiningbasic
notionswhichconstitutethecoreofthematerial.Thefirstedition,
althoughverymodestinitsgraphicdesign(thechartswereblackand
white)becamequitepopularamongthestudentsinPolandand
abroad,andwassoonsoldout.
Takingtheopportunity,wedecidedtoprepareanotheredition
oftheOlrazkowysłownikjęzyka!olskiegowhichwouldincludenewideas
oftheauthorsandtakeintoaccounttheremarksandopinionsofthe
readers.Thefundamentalprincipleofthedictionary,i.e.presenting
meaningsoflexicalitemsbymeansofillustrations,hasnotchanged.
However,thankstothenew,colorcharts,thegraphicdesignofthe
dictionaryandclarityoftheillustrationshaveconsiderablyimproved.
Somenewlexicalelementshavebeenadded,whichincreasedthe
overallnumberofentries.
Themajorityoflexicalitemsdefinedbythepicturedictionary
arecontentwords.Themostnumerouscategoryarenouns,thencome
verbsandadjectives.Theshareofeachpartofspeechinthelexical
materialcoveredbythedictionaryreflectsitsfrequencyofoccurrence
inthevocabularyrepertoireofanaveragenativespeakerofPolish
(accordingtotheresultsofresearchbyM.Zarębina,nounsconstitute
50%ofthevocabulary,whereasverbsandadjectives22%and18%
respectively).
Thelexicalmaterialispresentedin32subjectareaswhichin
principleareincompleteandtailoredtotheneedsofprospective
users.Groupingthelexicalmaterialinsubjectareasseemsmoreade-
quatethantheirpresentationinalphabeticalorder,aswordsappear
intheirnaturalcontext,whichsignificantlyfacilitatestheiridentifica-
tionandsemanticization.Alphabeticalorderhasitslogic,butitisdif-
ferentfromaneverydaylogicaccordingtowhichs!oonsandforks
accompany!lates,andnots!ongesorforests.Thisdictionarydoesnot
introduceanynewnotionalsystem.Itisratheraflatclassificationof
vocabularyontwolevels:superiorandsubordinate,withtheareas
