Duetotechnicaldifficultyinpresentingverbs,adjectivesorad-
verbsinthesamechartsasnounswithinparticularsubjectareas,sepa-
ratechartsareintroducedforotherpartsofspeech(33–36).Itseems
thisarrangementfacilitatesusingthedictionaryandhelpsthepro-
spectiveusertoavoidpossibledoubtsastowhetheranillustration
referstoanobject,aquality,oranaction.
Eachsubjectareacomprisesoneormorecharts,dependingon
itssize.Inthegrammaticalsection(33–36),singleillustrationsare
usedinsteadofcharts.Everydefinedelementandeveryillustration
hasanumber.Thenumbersrefertothewordslistedonthepage
opposite.
Atthebackofthedictionarythereisanalphabeticalindexofall
lexicalitemsdefinedinthebook,togetherwithreferencestoarele-
vantchartorcharts.Allitemsintheindexcontaininformationindi-
catingwhichpartofspeechthewordis.Thebaseformofthenounis
thenominativesingular.Thebaseformisfollowedbytheinforma-
tionongender,andfullformsofthegenitiveandlocativesingular.
Formasculinenouns,thedictionaryalsogivesthenominativeplural
form.PilotstudiesonerrorsmadebyforeignersstudyingPolishindi-
catethatthesetwocasesarethemostdifficult.Thebaseformof
theverbistheinfinitive.Thedictionaryillustratesgraphicallybasic
meaningsofimperfectiveverbs.Theindexprovidestheirperfective
counterparts.Adjectivesaregiveninthemasculinenominativesin-
gularform,togetherwiththecomparativedegreeform.
Ihopethatthepicturedictionaryinitsnewdesignincolorwill
behelpfulbothforthelearnersandtheteachersofPolish.Iwould
likethisbooktobecomeavisualaidinteachingPolish,whichwill
makelanguageclassesmoreattractiveandhelplearnersmemorize
usefuleverydayvocabularyfasterandmoreeffectively.
