Yemen,thecountry’sterritorystretchedoverpartsofthepresentOmanandSau-

diArabia.Ma’ribservedasitsﬁrstcapital,tobereplacedlaterbyẒafśr.Around

thefourthcenturyCE,HimyarwitnessedthespreadofChristianity,withthecity

ofNadjrśnbecomingtheChristianreligion’smaincentre.Intheﬁfhcentury,

thecitywaselevatedtothepositionoftheMonophysiticbishopric.Later,Ju-

daismappearedinthecity,whichledtotheoutbreakofaconﬂictbetweenits

rulers,whoconvertedtothenewreligion,andtheirChristiansubjects.Himyar’s

mostfamousJewishkingwasDhūNuwśs.Heruledintheﬁrsthalfofthesixth

centuryandbeganpersecutionofChristians

aimedatcelestialbodiesorrepresentingthem.Amalelunargodusuallyheaded

eachpantheon.TesungodandtheplanetVenuswerealsohighlyregarded.Inthe

kingdomofSaba’thosegodsformeda„triad”

oversightofmukarrib.Processionsheldaroundsacredstoneswerethecharacteris-
