thelinguafancaofthetime,thatis,Aramaic.However,Arabic(Nabatean)
remainedaspokenlanguage,withaversionoftheAramaicalphabet,called
theNabateanscript,usedinwriting.Overthecenturiesitunderwentgradual
modification,finallyassumingtheformofmodernArabic.
AtfirsttheNabateansledanexclusivelypastoralnomadiclife.Withtime,
someofthemsettledincitiesandbegantooccupythemselveswithtrade.Tecities
