Introduction

emotionalskills(thelikesofcooperation,effectivecommunication,
peoplemanagement,motivatingoneselfandothers,copingwithchal-
lengesandstress,andmanyothers)areincreasinglymoreoftenap-
pearingamongthetraitsconsideredbyemployersinrecruitmentspro-
cedures.Ontheother,theneedforworkshopsortrainingsofsocial
andemotionalcompetenciesisontheriseandtheoffersonthemarket
inthisscopearebecomingincreasinglyricher.
Duetothesignificanceofsocialandemotionalcompetencies,ques-
tionsconcerningtheirdeterminantsareincreasinginimportance,
namely,questionsconcerningthefactorsresponsiblefortheindividual
differencesinthisarea,whicharemakingsomepeoplecapable,thanks
tothesocialandemotionalcompetenciespossessedbythem,offully
utilisingtheirintellectualpotential,achievelifegoalsandmaintainsa-
tisfactorysocialbonds,whileothers,duetoadeficitintheaforemen-
tionedskills,functionbelowtheircapabilities,cannotcopewiththe
difficultiestheyencounter,feellonelyoralienatedanddisplaysignsof
inadaptation.Thesearetheveryissuesthatthisbookaddresses.The
discussionsandempiricalresearchpresentedinthebookconcernfac-
torsthatdeterminesocialandemotionalcompetencies.
Intheliteratureconcerningourtopicofinterest,noagreementhas
fullybeenreachedregardingthescopeofconceptsaswellastheter-
minologyusedinthisfield.Particularlytherelationsbetweenthecon-
ceptsof“socialintelligence”and“emotionalintelligence”aswellas
betweentheconceptsof“intelligence”and“competence”,andthe
terms“abilities”and“skills”aredefineddifferently.Someauthors
haveatendencytousedifferenttermsinterchangeably.Theseissues
arenotofprimeimportanceintheresearchpresentedinthisbook
whichiswhytheyhavenotbeendealtwithindetailandnosingle
standpointhasbeenpropounded.Nevertheless,theAuthorsofthis
bookareinclinedtotreat“socialintelligence”and“emotionalintelli-
gence”asconceptswithintersectingscopes.Inlinewiththiswayof
understanding,socialintelligenceisasetofabilitiesthatprocessbe-
haviouralinformationcontainedinthebehavioursofotherpeople;
