that“Hiskingdomisnotofthisworld”(J18:36),thatoneshouldaban-
don“waitingforanyinternal-historicsalvation,”thatfreedomofmanin
atemporalorderofthingsisconstantlyopenedbothto“yes”and“no”,
thatthegreatdramaofhistoryoftheworldisnotapuppetshow,and
freedomisthetruthtotheverycoreofhumanityandthecreatedreality
.
Theworldprojectis“unfinished”indeed,abothconstructionanddecon-
structionareequallypossible.Truthsetsonefree,freedomisreal.16
AndtheChristianfaithknowsthatinallthis(notoutsideorbeside)
ChrististheLordofhistoryandSaviourofourfreedom.
2.Twoconceptsoffreedom—twoanthropologies
Atthispoint,however,weshouldfinallyaskaquestionthatisfunda-
mentalforfurtherreflection:Whatisfreedom?Howshoulditbeunder-
stood?Whatideasandtheoriesarehiddenbehinditsparticularinterpre-
tations(andimplementationsoratleastattemptsofimplementation)?
Whatvisionofreality
,whatphilosophy
,anthropology
,theologyaretobe
found“underneath”?Andthemostimportantquestion:Whatisfreedom
inthelightoftheEternalWordofGod,inveritatissplendore?
Inthemid-1980stwodocumentsoftheCongregationfortheDoctrine
oftheFaithontheTheologyofLiberationwerepublished.Boththedocu-
mentsweresignedbytheprefectofthecongregation(JosephRatzinger)
anditssecretary(AlbertoBovone).ThefirstoneisInstructiononcertain
aspectsofthe“TheologyofLiberation”dated6August1984.Thesecond
oneisInstructiononChristianfreedomandliberationdated22March
1986.Bothoftheinstructions,widelydiscussedintheologyandcom-
mentariesofthelastdecadesofthe20thcentury(eventoday
,tobeexact)
constituteacompendiumofviewsofthepresentpopeonfreedomand
liberationinthecontextofthephenomenonoftheso-calledTheologyof
Liberation.Buttheyarefirstandforemostapeculiarcentrearoundwhich
other,numeroustextsconcerningtheissueoffreedomwerewritten(e.g.
Freedomandliberation17;Eschatologyandutopia18;Freedomandtiesinthe
