Thearticlefocusesonthetransformationswhichhavebeentakingplace
intheliteraryeducationinsecondaryschoolssincetheendofthe1980s.The
expression“thebattleofthebooks”,borrowedfromasatirebyJonathanSwift,
describestheproblemofreadinglistchoicesandoftherelateddiscussions.
Themilitarymetaphorsallowtooutlinethedifferentlinesofdisputes:literary
traditionversuscontemporaryworks,classicsversuspopularliterature,Polish
literatureversusforeignliterature,fictionversusnon-fiction.The“battlefor
books”,ontheotherhand,referstothereadingcrisiswhichhasmanifested
itselfwithaparticularforcesincetheturnofthelastcentury,andtothe
diverseactionsaimedatthepromotionofreading.
Theanalysisofthecurricula,ofthediscussionsatsubsequentconven-
tionsofpolonists,aswellasofpublicationsofliteraturemethodologistsallows
toidentifythemostsignificantchangesbothineducationalobjectivesandin
didacticreflectionsandpractice.Amongothers,theyconsistinthenecessity
todevelopareadingneedandhabitinstudents.Theconcludingobservations
definethetasksforthefuture.
