humanimmunodeficiencyvirus(HIV)hasmadeallhealthcare
organizationawareoftheneedtoprotecthealthcareproviders.Tese
threatscausedtheCentersofDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDC)
toreleaseitsguidelinesforuniversalprecautions,calledStandard
Precautions(Table2a,pp.24–25).
TepurposeoftheStandardPrecautionsistoprotecthealthcare
workersfromcontractingillnessesfromspecimenstheyhandle,the
patientstheycarefor,andtheenvironmentinwhichtheywork.Tis
policyrecommendsthatallpatientsshouldbeconsideredpotentially
infectiousregardlessoftheirinfectionstatus.
