1.Assumethateverypersonispotentiallyinfectedorcolonizedwith
organismsthatcouldbetransmittedinthehealthcaresetting.
2.Practiceappropriatehandhygienebeforeandaftercontactwithapatient,
aftercontactwiththesurfacesorobjectsaroundthepatient,andafter
removinggloves(ifused).
3.Weargowns,aprons,protectiveeyewear(i.e.goggles,faceshields),face
masks,andprotectiveclothing(e.g.laboratorycoat)wheneverexposedto
tissues,blood,orotherbodyfluids.
4.Immediatelyremoveglovesthathaveaholeinthem.
5.Cleancareequipmentbetweenpatients.
6.Implementrespiratoryhygiene/coughetiquetteinstructionstocontain
respiratorysecretionsinpatientsandaccompanyingindividualswhohave
signsandsymptomsofarespiratoryinfection.Theseincludepostingsigns
withinstructionsaboutcoveringmouths/noses,andhandhygiene.Offer
maskstocoughingpatientsandencouragethemtokeepadistanceofat
leastthreefeetfromtheothers.
7.Eating,drinking,applyingcosmetics,orhandlingcontactlensesis
prohibitedinpatientcareareas.
8.Ifthehealthcareworker’sskinisopened,glovesshouldbewornwhenever
directpatientcareisperformed.
9.Ifahealthcareworkerhasexperiencedanexposuretobloodorbodyfluids
(e.g.needlestick),testingofthehealthcareworkerandthepatientforHBV
andHIVisnecessary.
