Thecategoryisconceptualizedastwovantages,calleddominantandreces-
sive.Thedominantvantagestartswithabluefocusandthestrongeratention
tosimilarityendowsitwithawiderrange.Atlevel2,Sisfixatedandthenew
mobilecoordinateGn(green)isintroduced.Thisisinturnfixatedatlevel3,
whendiference(D)appearsonstage.Otherwisephrased,asaresultofthe
appearanceofthegreenhueintheconceptualizer’sfieldofatention,therole
ofsimilarityweakenstomakewayfordiference:thevantageisendowedwith
amargin.Therecessivevantagearisesthroughareversalofthecoordinates:
Gnistheprimaryfixedcoordinate,DisemphasizedfirstandmorethanS.As
aresult,themarginofthevantageisestablishedbeforeitsrange:therange
“fillsin”theportionofthecolourspectrumbetweenGnandthemarginthus
