beanactofpassiveresistanceagainstthesocialspherewherethereisno

roomforthoselyinginbed,itwouldbeanactofengagedconformism.

inﬂuencedherdecision(thesonclaimeditwashermodesty),butwhatcan

weimagine?LetusconsiderwhatwouldhavehappenedifZoﬁaŻeleńska

hadallowedherhusbandtomentionherasaco-translator.Collectingbooks

bywomenandtheimpactofspeciﬁcbooksontheirlivesdeservestobe

describedinaseparatearticle.Thisphenomenonwasalreadydescribedby

AgataZawiszewskainherbookonIrenaKrzywicka,whereZawiszewska

reformulatesthereceptionofKrzywicka’sworksanddeemphasizesthein-

ﬂuenceofgreatmenonhermother,herlibraryandidentitychoiceswhich

shapedthepublicist(Zawiszewska2010).Thereisadifference,though,

betweenthelibrary’seffectonawriterandamarriedwomanwhoaccom-

paniesherhusbandinconstructingatranslationcanon.IfŻeleńskahad

beenmentionedonthetitlepages,shewouldhavecertainlyencountered

someofthecriticismlevelledatBoy.Besides,didŻeleńska–thewifereally

haveachoice?Didherhusband’slifeandherown,mostofalltheiraffairs,

giveheranopportunitytoparticipateinthepubliclife?Byputtingher

nameonthetitlepage,wouldshenothavesubjectedherselftomalicious

comments,whichaffectedheranyway?ThelongerIthinkaboutit,theless

surprisedIamthatshepreferredtoliedownandcloseherbedroomdoor

nottobedisturbed.

Everytimetranslationmakesusconsidermulticulturalismandnational

languages.Thisaspectseemstomeextremelyinterestinginthecontextof

feminismandsensitivity.Theturnof20thcentury,averyimportantperiod

fortheemancipationofwomen,isamultilingualheritagewhichallowsus

toanalysethecategoriesofthecentre/peripheryinawaywhichdoesnot

focusoncentralpositions.9WhatIhaveinmindistheprivilegedposition
