cosmogonyandfunctioningoftheworldandofhumanbeings.Iwillcallthemthe
philosophicalmodels.Thephilosophicalmodelsdiscussedinthisbookareasfollows:
themodelofChildOfTheWaters,ofTheBoiledInTheRaw,ofTheWaveOf
Honey,ofStreamsOfClarifiedButter,ofTheAgirasasFreeingCows,ofIndra’s
FightWithV{tra,ofFootprintsOfVisnuandofTheCopperPillar.
MostoftheÇgvedicblendsareblendswhichconsistofmorethantwoinput
spaces.Theirinputspacesareofseveralkinds.Thefirstgrouparethedefiningevents
andthegeneraldomainswhichconstitutetheinputspacesofmostoftheblends.In
caseofphilosophicalmodels,cosmogonicandcosmologicconceptsareoftenincluded
astheirinputspacewithafurtherthenextinputspacebeingthegeneralmodelof
realitytransformation.Theyalsoaddaninputspacewhichfacilitatesunderstanding
oftheemergentspaceandprovidesitwithorganisingframesandtopology.Usually,
itisaverysimpleimagewhichbringsthecomplicatedcontentsofamodelinto
human-scalesituationsandwhichischaracteristicforagivenmodel(growthof
aplant,drivingthecowstothepasture,milkingthem,preparingclarifiedbutter,
killingasnakewithastick,walkingandleavingfootprints,supportingahousewith
apillar).ThephilosophicalmodelofChildOfTheWatersistheonlyexception
inthatitscharacteristicimageisaninternallycontradictoryconceptoffirewhich
burnsinwater.Themodelsthatrecruitfromthemythologicaleventsofwhichgods
aretheagentsincludeaspacewhichpresentsthegod’sactivityinaschematic
way;thisspacemayprompttherecipienttounfoldthewholeimageryconnected
withagivenmyth.Otherinputspacesoftheblendsareconstruedinthecontextof
aparticularstanzaorhymn.Thegenericspaceisconstitutedbythegeneralscenario
ofthedefiningevents,i.e.theappearanceofthesymboloflightfromthesymbol
ofdarkness.
TheÇgvedicblendsprompttheirrecipienttocreatecomplex,holisticnotions
ofvariousaspectsofrealityorofrealityasawhole.Someinputspacesareabstract
andgeneral,otherarecloselyconnectedwithconcretephenomenaandprocesses.
Thankstothisitbecomespossibletocreateemergentspaceswhichunfoldanoverall
and,atthesametime,averydetailedvisionofallreality.TheÇgvedicconceptual
blendsattesttotheabilitytouniteabstractandgeneralthinkingwithrichimagery,
deeplygroundedinexperience.Thepoetsskilfullybalancedthesetwowaysof
thinkingandinvitedtheirrecipientstodothesame.
ItfollowsthenthattheÇgvedicblendsmeetthemaingoalsofconceptual
integrationformulatedbyFauconnierandTurnerasachievinghumanscale,
compressingwhatisdiffused,obtainingglobalinsight,strengtheningvitalrelations,
creatingastoryandmovingfromthemanytoone(Fauconnier,Turner2002:322–323).
Theyprompttherecipient:ontheonehand,tounfoldvariousstoriesevokedby
theinputspacesofblend,ontheotherhand,tounderstandthatallthestoriescan
bereducedintoone,moregeneralidea.
