Asfarastheorganisationofthispublicationisconcerned,itconsistsof
threechapters.
ChapterIisdevotedentirelytoanoverviewoffirstlanguageacquisition
theories,concentratingonthosethathavebecomelandmarksforthefirst
languageacquisitionresearch.Myaimistoshowthateachnewdevelopment
originatedasanantithesisofthetheoryprecedingit.Thewayinwhichtheviews
onthenatureoftheprocessoffirstlanguageacquisitionevolvedisadirect
reflectionofaneverlastingdichotomybetweenthosewhosupporttheideaofthe
innatenessoflanguageanditsdetachmentfromcognitiveskills,andthosewho
areoftheopinionthatlanguageisnotinnateandthatitisinseparablyconnected
withcognition.Thus,Igiveashortaccountofbehaviourism,whichisbelieved
tohavespurredconsiderableinterestinthestudyofchildlanguage.ThenI
brieflycommentontheChomskianUniversalGrammartheorywhichoriginated
fromcriticismofbehaviouristapproachesonthegroundsthattheyweretoo
simplistic.Lastly,Iconcentrateonthemostrecentdevelopments,namely
cognitivistaccountsoffirstlanguageacquisition,refutingthepremise
concerningtheessentialroleofcreativityintheprocessoffirstlanguage
acquisitionputforwardbygenerativists.
InchapterIIIconcentrateonthechildren’searliestutterances,formedatthe
onsetofamulti-wordstage,fromwhichnumerousimportantsentenceelements
havebeendeleted,andwhichisreferredtoastelegraphicspeech.Iattemptto
accountforthenatureoftheseomissionsinthelightofbothtraditional
approachesandthelatesttheoriesoffirstlanguageacquisition.Atthesametime
Icomeupwithawidevarietyofinterpretationsofsuchincompleteutterances,
resultingfromthephenomenonoflanguageredundancy.Next,Icarryoutan
analysisoftelegraphicutterancesbothfromtheEnglishandPolishsamplewith
aviewtospecifyingthedegreeoftheirambiguityaswellasestablishing
differencesandsimilaritiesbetweenthePolishandtheEnglishsample,asfaras
thegrammaroftelegraphicutterancesisconcerned.
Finally,chapterIIIisdevotedtothemorphologicalandsyntactic
developmentthatchildrenundergo,analysedwithinthecognitiveframework.As
