acceptedopinions(likeinsurveys)andspectacularbutsingleandoccasionally
takenhealthevents.Shortly,whenwesaythathealthisimportantwedosotostay
incollectivityofvalues,butitnotmeanssystematicalcaringabouthealth.
Exploringnormativevalueofhealthwasclosetosociomedicalapproachof
health.Teconservativeresearchers(likeM.Sokolowska)claimthatachieving
healthisnaturalpriorityinindividuals’activityandthemainvaluewhichall
othervaluesdependon.Inthiscontextindividualshouldbefocusedonhealth
treatedastheborderconditionofallothervaluesandlife-timegoals.
Butmanyprofessionalandnon-professionalobservationsnoticethatformost
peoplehealthisimportantdespiteotherlifepriorities,butitmaybeimportant
"silently”,whenitispersonallyinwardlyexperienced.Healthisveryoftenun-
noticeduntilthepersonfallsill.Healthasanindividualexperiencemeansagood,
naturalthingassuch,eventhoughapersondoesnotusethis"feelinghealthy”for
anyotherpurposes.(Donuhe-WhiteandCuddeback20027).
Nextwemustconsiderthesecondkindofconceptualunderstandingof
healthwhichiscalledreal-lifeorgenuinevalueofhealth.Inthiscontextthees-
sentialassumptioniswhy"thereal”valueofhealthdoesnotreferto"thenorma-
tive”one.Temostinterestingquestionis:whypeopledeclarethathealthisthe
mostimportantthingintheirlifeandsimultaneouslytakealmostnoneactivity
toprotectordecreaseit.Ontheconceptualandempiricalleveltheanswerrefers
tothestrengthofdesireofthatvalue,particularlyinrelationtoothervalues.Te
mostknownPolishresearcherwhoconductedsuchuneasyempiricalstudywas
K.Puchalski.Hewastryingtondthevalidationofemotionalattitudesinrela-
tiontohealth,whichcompeteswithotherlife-timevalues.Accordingtotheau-
thor"itisnaivetoexpectthatrelativelyhealthymanorwomancouldbefocused
onhealthmorethanonanothervalues”.
Tesociologistexploretheareaofsocialvalues,buttheyrarelyconduct
empiricalchallengewhichcouldallowtoshowtherelationshipsbetweenhealth
andanothervalues.Whichofthemcompetewithhealthandwhichofthem
howevermightpotentiallystrengthenindividualstrivingforhealth?Whichof
themaretherealthreatforhumanhealth?Suchresearchmightgivethelightto
solveevenpartiallytheproblemofunhealthybehaviors.Temainresultof
Puchalski’sstudiesisthestatementthatmanypeopleaskediftheywouldchoose
healthoranyothervalue,theywouldsay‘Idon’tknow’8.
