Summary
Tearticleshowsthedifferencesbetweencommonandprofessionalunderstand-
ingofhealthassocialvalue.Inthepostmodernsocietiesthosetwomeaningsofhealth
crossoverandthatmightbethemainreasonofineffectivehealthpromotionand
education.Temainproblemofbothhealtheducationandhealthpromotion,which
aiminteachingpeoplehowtolivehealthier,restonunrealassumptionthatmedical
definitionofhealthcanbeeasilyinculcatedtopeople’scommonthinking.Meaningof
healthandsymptomsofanillnessisderivedfromtheculturalandsocialmilieuwhich
inturnshapestheresponsesandhelp-seekingbehaviors.
Usingsociologicalperspectiveandsomenewndingstheauthorssuggesttoreject
thepresentapproachofprofessionaldefinitionofhealth,becauseitcausesinequalities
andfailuresinstrivingforhealth.Moresatisfiedresultscanbeachievedwhenmedical
professionalslearnhowtheirpatientsunderstandthemeaningofhealth.Tereisone
essentialstatementinpresentedapproach:medicalstaffmustknowthathealthwill
bemoreimportanttothepersonwhenweshowpatientsthathisorherhealthworks
likeindividualcapitalcarryingmanypossibilities.Itisevenmoreimportantforpeople
whogotillandthinkthateverythingtheycandoisseeingthedoctor.Tereisthe
significantneedtodiminishahierarchybetween‘expert’and‘lay’healthknowledge
andrefinedefinitionofhealthfollowingitseverydaypercepts,whileatthesametime
tocreatebridgesbetweenanewconceptualdefinitionandeffectivehealtheducation.
Itisnecessarytoinnovateteachertrainingandinforceteacherreadinesstohelpthe
younggenerationtodealwiththechoicesandcurrentproblems,especiallythosecon-
nectedwithhealth.
