Interlanguagepragmatics(ILP)isahybridresearchsubfeldatthecross-
roadsofinterlanguage2studiesandpragmatics.ILPviewsPCfromadevel-
opmentalangle,thatis,itexaminesbothHhownon-nativespeakerscompre-
hendandproduceactioninatargetlanguage”andhowtheseabilitiessegue
withtime(KasperandRose2002a:5).KasperandRose’sdefnitionindicates
thatlanguagelearnersneednotonlytoproducecontextuallyappropriatesen-
tencesbutalsoneedtobeawareofwhatconstitutesappropriatelinguistic
behaviorintheTL(Schauer2009:15).Apartfrompragmaticsandacquisi-
tionstudies,thissubfeldhasalsobeenstronglyinfluencedbyHymes’s(1968,
1972a,b)conceptofcommunicativecompetence,allofwhicharediscussed
inthepresentchapter.Becausewecannotstartinacompleteconceptualvac-
uum,someselectedinitialconceptsarebrieflydiscussedbelow,assumingthe
perspectivedelineatedbythemaintopicofthisworkl
1.1.Pragmaticsandmacropragmatics
Giventhatpragmaticresearchisorientedtowardstudyinglanguage
assumingtheHuser’spointofview”(Mey2002:5)andHtheotherfacetsof
humanlife”(Verschueren1999:9),itisdiffculttodemarcateitsboundaries
clearlyandneatly.Infact,whatallpragmaticianswouldagreeonisthatthe
termpragmaticsisaverybroadandvagueone.Somedefneitasastudyof
howpeopleuseallthelevelsoflanguagetocommunicateHinactualcontexts
ofuse”(Verschueren1999:2,10),andespeciallyhowtheytakeadvantage
ofcontexttointerpretthemeaningofutteredmessages3lThisapproachalso
focusesonhowlanguageusersmakethingsdonewithlanguageandsimul-
taneouslymaintaininterpersonalrelationshipswithotherlanguageusers.
Forinstance,althoughthecategoryofdiminutivesandtheirformation(der-
ivation)belongstothemorphologicalleveloflanguageorganization,their
appropriateuserequiresanexplanationgroundedinpragmaticsbecause
theyexpressfamiliarityandrapportbetweeninterlocutors.Hence,froman
exploratorypointofview,themainobjectiveofpragmaticresearchisHunder-
standingtheapparentdiscrepancybetweenwhatwesayandwhatwemean”
(O’Keeffeetal.2011:84),i.e.,theactualorintendedmeaningratherthanthe
meaningwhichderivesstraightforwardlyfromlinguisticelements.Thisis
