needtoseparateproducestuttering.Shesuggeststhatoneofherpatient’sstutterwas
symptomaticofhimgetting‘stuck’intheprocessesofseparationbecauseofhisneed
toremainfusedwithmother7.
WinslowHuntdescribesthecentralconflictwithinthestutterer’spersonalityto
be“betweenthewishtobeinharmonywiththemotherandthewishtobecomehis
ownindependentself8.
Asweknow,thatearlyexperiencesinchildhoodhaveanimportantinfluence
ondevelopmentandbehaviorinlaterlife.Ithinkthatchildren,whoenduredearly
separation,aremoresensitivetothelaterseparation,andbecomeindependentmore
difcultly.
Casestudy
A13-year-oldboywasreferredtospeechtherapybecauseofhisstuttering.He
startedtostutterwhenhewasthreeyearsoldandthattimehealsohadbedwetting
problem.
Intheearlyperiodduringhisdiagnosticprocessitturnedoutthathehad
seriousemotionalproblems.Hewasofenmoodyandsadwithoutanyreason.
Sometimeshebecameirritableandwithdrewfromsocialsituations.Atthattime
helosthisinterestinschoolandwasthinkingaboutcommittingsuicide.Iused
