PREFACE
Thisbookconcernssomevalidissuesoforganizationofcontemporaryenter-
prises.Theyarechosenamongalotofotherandthechoiceisdeterminedbythe
researchwhichisledintheDivisionofManagementandInformationTechnology
whichisaunitofInstituteofManagementEngineeringatPoznanUniversityof
Technology.Thethematicscopeoftheseissuesincludesmethodsandstructuresof
management.
Theconceptsandmethodsofmanagementarethedominatingissuesinthat
book.Areviveofseveralofthemisincludedinthefirstchapter.Theresultsof
researchconcerningtheinfluenceofthemethodsonmarketeffectivenessofsmall
andmediumenterprisesfromthegassectorispresented.Howevertheissuesofthis
chapterisnotsomuchfocusedontheresultsasontheinterpretationthatisori-
entedonselectingconceptsandmethodswhicharecrucialtomarketeffectiveness
ofinvestigatedenterprises.Wethingthatbecauseoftherelationsexistingamong
theinvestigatedenterprisesthefindingsarerepresentativetoindustrialclasters
createdbySMEs.
Thesecondchapterconcernsthemanagementofcontinuousimprovementproc-
ess(CI).AdeepenliteratureanalysisofCImodelshasbeenled.Thefindingsof
theanalysisprepareanempiricalresearchthathavebeenundertakenandarecon-
tinuedtoverifysomehypothesisconcerningtheconditionswhichhavetobeful-
filledintheorganizationalsystemofenterprisesotheCIprocesshasbeendurable,

ThenexttwochaptersgenerallydealwithIntegratedComputer-BasedTech-
nologies.Thefirstofthempresentsahistoricalreviewofdevelopmentofcom-
puter-basedsystemssupportingmanagement.Theparticularinteresthasbeenhold
withBusinessIntelligenceSystems.Thesecondone–concernstheoptimizationof
businessITapplications.Thediscussedapproachtoadjustthesoftwaretothe
changingbusinessenvironmentissoftwarecustomization.Thegoalistoextendthe
softwarelifecycle.Themethodsofsoftwaredevelopmentarepresented.
Thefifthchapterplaysaroleofconnectorbetweentheissuesonconceptsand
methodsofmanagementandtheissuesonorganizationalstructures.Itconcernsthe
ConcurrentEngineering(CE)butnotsomuchtheprocessaspectsofthemethodas
structuralconditionsforimplementationofCE.Concurrentengineeringrequires
inter-functionalteam-basedworkingandsuchteamsareexampleofvirtualstruc-
tures.
