Summary
OrthodoxnobletribunesandtheatSejmsofthePolish-Lithuanian
Commonwealthattheendofthe16thandthefirsthalfofthe17thcentury.
ThenoblesoftheOrthodoxreligioninthePolish-LithuanianCommonwealthwere
mostactiveintheparliamentaryfieldattheendofthe16thandthefirsthalfofthe17th
century.ItwasconnectedwiththeintroductionoftheUnionofBrest(1595-96),which
deterioratedthelegalandpracticalsituationoftheOrthodox.Forthisreason,thedemand
forncalmingdowntheGreekreligion”begantoappearregularlyintheinstructionsof
sejmiksintheeastofthePolish-LithuanianCommonwealth,wherethepopulationofthe
Russianoriginlived.PreservedparliamentarydiariesshowthatOrthodoxMPsusually
tookthefloorintheSejmtodefendOrthodoxy.Themostfrequentmembersofparlia-
mentandthemostactivesupportersoftheOrthodoxChurchwererepresentativesof
sejmiksinvoivodshipsoftheVolhynia,KievandBraclaw,i.e.thelandsannexedtothe
PolishCrown(andthosetakenfromLithuania)in1569.Becauseofthetriumphofthe
counter-reformationinthePolish-LithuanianCommonwealthinthesecondhalfofthe
17thcentury,andespeciallyfromtheearly1660s,representativesofOrthodoxnobility
remainedsporadicallydeputies.Therewerenotsucheminentparliamentariansasbefore,
suchasŁawrynDrewiński,AdamKisielorAleksanderOgiński,whodiedin1667asthe
lastOrthodoxsenatoroftheFirstPolishRepublic.
