3.1Inthosedays,JohntheBaptizercame,preachinginthewildernessofJudea,saying,3.2“Repent,fortheKingdomofHeavenisathand!”
3.3ForthisishewhowasspokenofbyIsaiahtheprophet,saying,
“Thevoiceofonecryinginthewilderness,
makereadythewayoftheLord.
Makehispathsstraight.”
3.4NowJohnhimselfworeclothingmadeofcamel’shair,withaleatherbeltaroundhiswaist.Hisfoodwaslocustsandwildhoney.3.5Then
peoplefromJerusalem,allofJudea,andalltheregionaroundtheJordanwentouttohim.3.6Theywerebaptized[*]byhimintheJordan,
confessingtheirsins.3.7ButwhenhesawmanyofthePhariseesandSadduceescomingforhisbaptism[*],hesaidtothem,“Youoffspring
ofvipers,whowarnedyoutofleefromthewrathtocome?3.8Thereforeproducefruitworthyofrepentance!3.9Don’tthinktoyourselves,
‘WehaveAbrahamforourfather,’forItellyouthatGodisabletoraiseupchildrentoAbrahamfromthesestones.
3.10“Evennowtheaxliesattherootofthetrees.Thereforeeverytreethatdoesn’tproducegoodfruitiscutdown,andcastintothefire.
3.11Iindeedbaptize[*]youinwaterforrepentance,buthewhocomesaftermeismightierthanI,whoseshoesIamnotworthytocarry.
HewillbaptizeyouintheHolySpirit[*].3.12Hiswinnowingforkisinhishand,andhewillthoroughlycleansehisthreshingfloor.Hewill
gatherhiswheatintothebarn,butthechaffhewillburnupwithunquenchablefire.”
3.13ThenJesuscamefromGalileetotheJordan[*]toJohn,tobebaptizedbyhim.3.14ButJohnwouldhavehinderedhim,saying,“Ineed
tobebaptizedbyyou,andyoucometome?”
3.15ButJesus,answering,saidtohim,“Allowitnow,forthisisthefittingwayforustofulfillallrighteousness.”Thenheallowedhim.3.16
Jesus,whenhewasbaptized,wentupdirectlyfromthewater:andbehold,theheavenswereopenedtohim.HesawtheSpiritofGod
descendingasadove,andcomingonhim.3.17Behold,avoiceoutoftheheavenssaid,“ThisismybelovedSon,withwhomIamwell
pleased.”

4.1ThenJesuswasledupbytheSpiritintothewildernesstobetemptedbythedevil.4.2Whenhehadfastedfortydaysandfortynights,
hewashungryafterward.4.3Thetemptercameandsaidtohim,“IfyouaretheSonofGod,commandthatthesestonesbecomebread.”
4.4Butheanswered,“Itiswritten,‘Manshallnotlivebybreadalone,butbyeverywordthatproceedsoutofthemouthofGod.’”
4.5Thenthedeviltookhimintotheholycity.Hesethimonthepinnacleofthetemple,4.6andsaidtohim,“IfyouaretheSonofGod,
throwyourselfdown,foritiswritten,‘Hewillputhisangelsinchargeofyou.’and,
‘Ontheirhandstheywillbearyouup,
sothatyoudon’tdashyourfootagainstastone.’”
4.7Jesussaidtohim,“Again,itiswritten,‘YoushallnottesttheLord,yourGod.’”
4.8Again,thedeviltookhimtoanexceedinglyhighmountain,andshowedhimallthekingdomsoftheworld,andtheirglory.4.9Hesaid
tohim,“Iwillgiveyouallofthesethings,ifyouwillfalldownandworshipme.”
4.10ThenJesussaidtohim,“Getbehindme[*],Satan!Foritiswritten,‘YoushallworshiptheLordyourGod,andyoushallservehimonly.’”
4.11Thenthedevillefthim,andbehold,angelscameandservedhim.4.12NowwhenJesusheardthatJohnwasdeliveredup,hewithdrew
intoGalilee.4.13LeavingNazareth,hecameandlivedinCapernaum,whichisbythesea,intheregionofZebulunandNaphtali,4.14that
itmightbefulfilledwhichwasspokenthroughIsaiahtheprophet,saying,
4.15“ThelandofZebulunandthelandofNaphtali,
towardthesea,beyondtheJordan,
GalileeoftheGentiles,
4.16thepeoplewhosatindarknesssawagreatlight,
tothosewhosatintheregionandshadowofdeath,
tothemlighthasdawned.”
4.17Fromthattime,Jesusbegantopreach,andtosay,“Repent!FortheKingdomofHeavenisathand.”
4.18WalkingbytheseaofGalilee,he[*]sawtwobrothers:Simon,whoiscalledPeter,andAndrew,hisbrother,castinganetintothesea;for
theywerefishermen.4.19Hesaidtothem,“Comeafterme,andIwillmakeyoufishersformen.”
4.20Theyimmediatelylefttheirnetsandfollowedhim.4.21Goingonfromthere,hesawtwootherbrothers,JamesthesonofZebedee,and
Johnhisbrother,intheboatwithZebedeetheirfather,mendingtheirnets.Hecalledthem.4.22Theyimmediatelylefttheboatandtheir
father,andfollowedhim.
4.23JesuswentaboutinallGalilee,teachingintheirsynagogues,preachingtheGoodNewsoftheKingdom,andhealingeverydiseaseand
everysicknessamongthepeople.4.24ThereportabouthimwentoutintoallSyria.Theybroughttohimallwhoweresick,afflictedwith
variousdiseasesandtorments,possessedwithdemons,epileptics,andparalytics;andhehealedthem.4.25GreatmultitudesfromGalilee,
Decapolis,Jerusalem,JudeaandfrombeyondtheJordanfollowedhim.

5.1Seeingthemultitudes,hewentupontothemountain.Whenhehadsatdown,hisdisciplescametohim.5.2Heopenedhismouthand
taughtthem,saying,
5.3“Blessedarethepoorinspirit,
fortheirsistheKingdomofHeaven.
5.4Blessedarethosewhomourn,
