2.17WhenJesusheardit,hesaidtothem,“Thosewhoarehealthyhavenoneedforaphysician,butthosewhoaresick.Icamenottocall
therighteous,butsinnerstorepentance.”
2.18John’sdisciplesandthePhariseeswerefasting,andtheycameandaskedhim,“WhydoJohn’sdisciplesandthedisciplesofthe
Phariseesfast,butyourdisciplesdon’tfast?”
2.19Jesussaidtothem,“Canthegroomsmenfastwhilethebridegroomiswiththem?Aslongastheyhavethebridegroomwiththem,they
can’tfast.2.20Butthedayswillcomewhenthebridegroomwillbetakenawayfromthem,andthenwilltheyfastinthatday.2.21Noone
sewsapieceofunshrunkclothonanoldgarment,orelsethepatchshrinksandthenewtearsawayfromtheold,andaworsehole
ismade.2.22Nooneputsnewwineintooldwineskins,orelsethenewwinewillbursttheskins,andthewinepoursout,andtheskinswill
bedestroyed;buttheyputnewwineintofreshwineskins.”
2.23HewasgoingontheSabbathdaythroughthegrainfields,andhisdisciplesbegan,astheywent,toplucktheearsofgrain.2.24The
Phariseessaidtohim,“Behold,whydotheydothatwhichisnotlawfulontheSabbathday?”
2.25Hesaidtothem,“DidyouneverreadwhatDaviddid,whenhehadneed,andwashungry—he,andthosewhowerewithhim?2.26How
heenteredintoGod’shousewhenAbiatharwashighpriest,andatetheshowbread,whichisnotlawfultoeatexceptforthepriests,and
gavealsotothosewhowerewithhim?”2.27Hesaidtothem,“TheSabbathwasmadeforman,notmanfortheSabbath.2.28Thereforethe
SonofManislordevenoftheSabbath.”

3.1Heenteredagainintothesynagogue,andtherewasamantherewhohadhishandwithered.3.2Theywatchedhim,whetherhewould
healhimontheSabbathday,thattheymightaccusehim.3.3Hesaidtothemanwhohadhishandwithered,“Standup.”3.4Hesaid
tothem,“IsitlawfulontheSabbathdaytodogood,ortodoharm?Tosavealife,ortokill?”Buttheyweresilent.3.5Whenhehadlooked
aroundatthemwithanger,beinggrievedatthehardeningoftheirhearts,hesaidtotheman,“Stretchoutyourhand.”Hestretched
itout,andhishandwasrestoredashealthyastheother.3.6ThePhariseeswentout,andimmediatelyconspiredwiththeHerodians
againsthim,howtheymightdestroyhim.
3.7Jesuswithdrewtotheseawithhisdisciples,andagreatmultitudefollowedhimfromGalilee,fromJudea,3.8fromJerusalem,from
Idumaea,beyondtheJordan,andthosefromaroundTyreandSidon.Agreatmultitude,hearingwhatgreatthingshedid,cametohim.3.9
Hespoketohisdisciplesthatalittleboatshouldstaynearhimbecauseofthecrowd,sothattheywouldn’tpressonhim.3.10Forhehad
healedmany,sothatasmanyashaddiseasespressedonhimthattheymighttouchhim.3.11Theuncleanspirits,whenevertheysawhim,
felldownbeforehim,andcried,“YouaretheSonofGod!”3.12Hesternlywarnedthemthattheyshouldnotmakehimknown.
3.13Hewentupintothemountain,andcalledtohimselfthosewhomhewanted,andtheywenttohim.3.14Heappointedtwelve,thatthey
mightbewithhim,andthathemightsendthemouttopreach,3.15andtohaveauthoritytohealsicknessesandtocastoutdemons:3.16
Simon(towhomhegavethenamePeter);3.17JamesthesonofZebedee;andJohn,thebrotherofJames,(whomhecalledthem
Boanerges,whichmeans,SonsofThunder);3.18Andrew;Philip;Bartholomew;Matthew;Thomas;James,thesonofAlphaeus;Thaddaeus;
SimontheZealot;3.19andJudasIscariot,whoalsobetrayedhim.
Thenhecameintoahouse.3.20Themultitudecametogetheragain,sothattheycouldnotsomuchaseatbread.3.21Whenhisfriends
heardit,theywentouttoseizehim:fortheysaid,“Heisinsane.”3.22ThescribeswhocamedownfromJerusalemsaid,“Hehas
Beelzebul,”and,“Bytheprinceofthedemonshecastsoutthedemons.”
3.23Hesummonedthem,andsaidtotheminparables,“HowcanSatancastoutSatan?3.24Ifakingdomisdividedagainstitself,that
kingdomcannotstand.3.25Ifahouseisdividedagainstitself,thathousecannotstand.3.26IfSatanhasrisenupagainsthimself,and
isdivided,hecan’tstand,buthasanend.3.27Butnoonecanenterintothehouseofthestrongmantoplunder,unlesshefirstbindsthe
strongman;andthenhewillplunderhishouse.3.28MostcertainlyItellyou,allsinsofthedescendantsofmanwillbeforgiven,including
theirblasphemieswithwhichtheymayblaspheme;3.29butwhoevermayblasphemeagainsttheHolySpiritneverhasforgiveness,but
issubjecttoeternalcondemnation.”[*]3.30—becausetheysaid,“Hehasanuncleanspirit.”
3.31Hismotherandhisbrotherscame,andstandingoutside,theysenttohim,callinghim.3.32Amultitudewassittingaroundhim,andthey
toldhim,“Behold,yourmother,yourbrothers,andyoursisters[*]areoutsidelookingforyou.”
3.33Heansweredthem,“Whoaremymotherandmybrothers?”3.34Lookingaroundatthosewhosataroundhim,hesaid,“Behold,
mymotherandmybrothers!3.35ForwhoeverdoesthewillofGod,thesameismybrother,andmysister,andmother.”

4.1Againhebegantoteachbytheseaside.Agreatmultitudewasgatheredtohim,sothatheenteredintoaboatinthesea,andsatdown.
Allthemultitudewereonthelandbythesea.4.2Hetaughtthemmanythingsinparables,andtoldtheminhisteaching,4.3“Listen!
Behold,thefarmerwentouttosow,4.4andashesowed,someseedfellbytheroad,andthebirds[*]cameanddevouredit.4.5Othersfell
ontherockyground,whereithadlittlesoil,andimmediatelyitsprangup,becauseithadnodepthofsoil.4.6Whenthesunhadrisen,
itwasscorched;andbecauseithadnoroot,itwitheredaway.4.7Othersfellamongthethorns,andthethornsgrewup,andchokedit,and
ityieldednofruit.4.8Othersfellintothegoodground,andyieldedfruit,growingupandincreasing.Someproducedthirtytimes,somesixty
times,andsomeonehundredtimesasmuch.”4.9Hesaid,“Whoeverhasearstohear,lethimhear.”
4.10Whenhewasalone,thosewhowerearoundhimwiththetwelveaskedhimabouttheparables.4.11Hesaidtothem,“Toyouisgiven
themysteryofGod’sKingdom,buttothosewhoareoutside,allthingsaredoneinparables,4.12that‘seeingtheymaysee,andnot
perceive;andhearingtheymayhear,andnotunderstand;lestperhapstheyshouldturnagain,andtheirsinsshouldbeforgiventhem.’”
4.13Hesaidtothem,“Don’tyouunderstandthisparable?Howwillyouunderstandalloftheparables?4.14Thefarmersowstheword.4.15
Theonesbytheroadaretheoneswherethewordissown;andwhentheyhaveheard,immediatelySatancomes,andtakesawaythe
wordwhichhasbeensowninthem.4.16Theseinthesamewayarethosewhoaresownontherockyplaces,who,whentheyhaveheard
theword,immediatelyreceiveitwithjoy.4.17Theyhavenorootinthemselves,butareshort-lived.Whenoppressionorpersecutionarises
becauseoftheword,immediatelytheystumble.4.18Othersarethosewhoaresownamongthethorns.Thesearethosewhohaveheard
theword,4.19andthecaresofthisage,andthedeceitfulnessofriches,andthelustsofotherthingsenteringinchoketheword,and
itbecomesunfruitful.4.20Thosewhichweresownonthegoodgroundarethosewhoheartheword,andacceptit,andbearfruit,some
thirtytimes,somesixtytimes,andsomeonehundredtimes.”
4.21Hesaidtothem,“Isthelampbroughttobeputunderabasket[*]orunderabed?Isn’titputonastand?4.22Forthereisnothinghidden,
exceptthatitshouldbemadeknown;neitherwasanythingmadesecret,butthatitshouldcometolight.4.23Ifanymanhasearstohear,
lethimhear.”
4.24Hesaidtothem,“Takeheedwhatyouhear.Withwhatevermeasureyoumeasure,itwillbemeasuredtoyou,andmorewillbegiven
toyouwhohear.4.25Forwhoeverhas,tohimwillmorebegiven,andhewhodoesn’thave,eventhatwhichhehaswillbetakenaway
fromhim.”
4.26Hesaid,“God’sKingdomisasifamanshouldcastseedontheearth,4.27andshouldsleepandrisenightandday,andtheseedshould
springupandgrow,hedoesn’tknowhow.4.28Fortheearthbearsfruit:firsttheblade,thentheear,thenthefullgrainintheear.4.29But
whenthefruitisripe,immediatelyheputsinthesickle,becausetheharvesthascome.”
