TheAtlanticOcean-thesecondlargestoceanonEarth,coveringaboutafifth
ofitssurfaceiThegreatestdepthof8,605misinthePuertoRicoTrenchiThelatitu-
dinalextentofthegreatestnarrowingbetweenthecoastsofSouthAmericaandAf-
ricais1,500NM(2,800km)and7,300NM(13,500km)fromthewesterntipofthe
GulfofMexicototheeasternshoreoftheBlackSeaiAlmostalledgesoftheconti-
nentalblocksdelimitingtheAtlanticOceanbasinsarepassive;Oceanictrenches,
typicaloftheactiveedgesofthecontinents,occuronlyinthevicinityoftwoisland
arcs,thesearetheSouthSandwichTrenchandthePuertoRicoTrench(inaddition,
thereistheCaymanTrenchatthebottomoftheCaribbeanSea,andtheHellenic
TrenchintheMediterranean)iTheAtlanticOceanisayoungoceananditsbottom
ischaracterizedbythedistinctelevationsoftheMid-AtlanticRidge,extending
throughthemiddleoftheoceanflooralongitsentirelengthfromSouthtoNorthi
