Characteristicofseaareas
Theseasarethepartsoftheoceanboundedbycontinents,islands,oreleva-
tionsontheseabediThehydrologicalrelationsoftheseasareclearlydifferentfrom
thegeneralhydrologicalrelationsoftheoceansiWedivideallseasintothreebasic
groupsdependingontheseparationfromtheocean:
Inlandsea-locatedbetweentwolandmassifsandconnectedtothe
oceanthroughstraitsiThisgroupincludestheintercontinental(be-
tweencontinents)andintra-continental(locatedwithinoncontinent)
seasiTheintercontinentalseasinclude,forexample,theArcticSea,the
MediterraneanSea,theRedSea,andtheBlackSeaiAnexampleofan
intra-continentalseaistheBalticSeai
OuterSea(alsocalledadjacentormarginal)-relativelynottoodeep
cuttingintothelandoradjacenttoit,separatedfromtheoceanbypen-
insulasandislandsorunderwaterelevationsofthebottomiSomeof
themconnecttotheoceanwithwidestraitsandhavethecharacterof

Inter-islandsea-surroundedbyislands,betweenwhichthereare
generallyshallowerdepthsandunderwaterelevationsiExamplesof
