Thereisnodoubtthatlanguagewillbethebasicelementofmultimedia
communicationandinthenearfuture,alongwiththeincreaseintechnicalsystem
versatility,therewillbeanevercloserintegrationofspeechprocessingwithother
branchesofinformationtechnology.Human-computerandalsocomputer-
humaninteractionwillbethemainfocusoftheinformationsocietyinthecoming
years.Virtuallyallformsofactivityrelatedtoeconomics,politics,education,and
culturewillbebasedontechnologyenablingquickinteractiveaccessto
information.Astheefficiencyandqualityoftransducersthatenablethe
acquisitionofacousticsignalsincreaseandtheirdimensionsarereduced
(smartphones,mobiledevices),theneedforvoiceaccesstoknowledgeatany
placeandtimeandexchanginginformationbasedonuserfriendlyhuman-
computerinterfaces,regardlessoflanguage,educationorskill,isgrowing.
Theseapplicationsareexpectedtoperformmoreandmoretasks,which,
however,cannolongerbeaccomplishedduetotheoreticalandtechnical
limitations.Thesolutionsappliedlackmodellinghumanfactors,whichare
essentialinfriendlyandsuccessfulcommunication.Asmoreandmore
publicationsshow,therewillbenofurtherprogressinthisfieldwithoutbasicand
interdisciplinarywork,boththeoreticalandpractical,focusedonfindingnew
paradigms,especiallyforprocessinginteractivityinconversations.
Inthismonograph,asabasicmethodologicalaspect,achangeinspeech
processingmethodsfromcomputationaltocognitive,i.e.thosethatnotonly
statisticallyprocessdatabasedonanalysisandevaluationofthemostimportant
phoneticconvergencefactors,butalsoexplainthecomplexrelationshipsbetween
them,hasbeenacknowledged.Thismonographapproachesphonetic
convergenceasanotionrelatedtotheCommunicationAccommodationTheory
(CAT)whichregardshumanconversationasadynamicadaptivemessage
exchangedependingonpsycholinguisticinteractionsbetweenspeakers.Phonetic
convergence
in
conversation
involves
alignment
of
segmental
and
suprasegmentalfeaturesofspeechtothoseoftheinterlocutor,withthefunction
ofcooperativeormanipulativesignallingofsocialcommonground.
Thismonographdoesnotfocusontechniquesortheoriesrelatedtospeech
processingproducedbyspeakersinastrictlyimposedsituationalcontext,
althoughtheyofcoursesignificantlyinfluenceconversationalspeechmodelling.
Abasicreviewoftheliteratureonthesubjectjustifiesastatementthatnotmany
publicationscomprehensivelycovertheproblemofphoneticaccommodation
fromthepointofviewoftheoryandvariouspossibleapplicationsofspeech
technology.
Thepresentedworkisanattempttolookobjectivelyatthecurrentstateof
research,however,itdoesnotgiveafulloverview,itratherindicatesthe
