OBITUARY
1962,withtheNationalMuseuminWarsawandthePolishCenterofArchaeologyof
WarsawUniversity.Heundertookthetaskofpreservingtheancientfrescoesandfor
threelongexcavationseasons,workinginveryharshfieldconditions,hefirstpro-
tectedthewallpaintingsastheywereuncoveredinsidetheCathedralandthentook
themdowninpiecesfortransporttothemuseumstores.Thejobrequiredimmense
concentration,courageanddetermination,nottomentionexceptionalskill.Aided
onlybyasmallgroupofassistantsandwithjustthebasictechnicalfacilities,hecon-
cludedataskthatcanbecomparedonlywiththesavingoftheAbuSimbeltemples.
Over120paintedcompositionsfromFaraswerethussaved,includingsuchexcellent
andmonumentalpiecesastheThreeYouthsinFieryFurnace,Nativity,andthemas-
terpieceofmasterpieces–St.Anne.GazyalsohelpedoutwithW.Y.Adams´workat
Meinarti,protectingandtakingdownthewallpaintingsdiscoveredthere.Hethen
spentthreeyears,between1966and1969,intheNationalMuseuminKhartum,work-
ingtogetherwithSudanesecolleaguesontheconservationoftheFaraspaintingsin
preparationfortheopeningofapermanentexhibitionofNubianpaintingin1972.
Uponreturninghomein1969,heworkedattheNationalMuseuminWarsaw,con-
tinuinguntil1974aprojectbegunbyDr.HannaJędrzejewskatopreservetheFaras
paintingswhichhadbeenbroughttoPoland.
HisaccomplishmentsinSudangainedhiminternationalacclaim.Hewasawarded
theSudaneseOrderofMeritforhiswork.
Inthemid-seventies,Gazyreturnedtohisfavoriteoccupation–carvinginstone.
HeremainedassociatedwiththePolishCenterofArchaeology,completingtheconser-
vationofthemonumentalstatueofAthenaandthelionwithantelopediscoveredby
thePolishexpeditioninthetempleofAllatinPalmyra,Syria.
