Sculptor,authorofmonuments,participantinartsexhibitions,Gazywasinitiallya
conservatorofsculpture.Thepassionateinterestwhichheputinhisworkledhim,in
1962,totakepart–withincredibledeterminationanddevotion–intheinternational
UNESCOcampaigntorescuethemonumentsofancientNubia.Hisjobasconserva-
torwassalvagingthewallpaintingsfoundatFarasandMeinarti,bothsitestobe
submergedunderthewatersofalakethatwastoappearoncetheAswanDamwas
built.
GazygraduatedfromtheWarsawAcademyofFineArtsin1937.Afterthewar,he
workedontheconservationofsculptureintheWroclawcathedralandin1950took
overasculptureconservationstudioinWarsaw.ThegreatdiscoveriesmadeinNubia
byaPolishexpeditionheadedbyProfessorKazimierzMichatowskiandthenecessity
tosavetheancientwallpaintingsofNubiapavedthewayforhisfirstcontacts,in
